SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Four Syracuse incoming freshmen took part in the 2006 Governor’s Bowl, which pits a team of New York All-Stars against a team of all-stars from the state of New Jersey, on Sunday, June 11 at Michie Stadium at West Point. Linebacker Parker Cantey (Brooklyn, N.Y.), defensive back Derek Hrinya (Warwick, N.Y.) and receiver Dan Sheeran (Golden Bridges, N.Y.) were members of the 50-man New York squad and receiver Andrey Baskin (Camden, N.Y.) competed for the victorious New Jersey unit, which won the contest, 30-6.
Sheeran scored the only points for the New York All-Stars, catching a 12-yard touchdown pass from Naaman Roosevelt with 1:24 left in the first quarter to cut New Jersey’s lead to 7-6. It was his only reception of the game.
Cantey started the contest for the New York defense and finished with six tackles, including one for a loss when he dropped University of Georgia-bound running back and 2006 Governor’s Bowl MVP Knowshon Moreno behind the line of scrimmage. Cantey also recorded one of the best hits of the game when he leveled a New Jersey receiver on an underneath crossing route in the fourth quarter.
Baskin contributed to New Jersey’s winning effort, making one reception for six yards in the second half.
Hrinya was on the New York sideline, but did not play due to a hamstring injury suffered during the three days of practice leading up to the game.
The 2006 Orange report for preseason camp on Sunday, August 6 and kick off the season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Wake Forest.
