
Muchnick’s Five Points Pushes #6 ’Cuse Past #20 Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals

Emma Muchnick posted a season-high five points to lead No. 6 ranked and fourth-seeded Syracuse past No. 20 ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinal round on Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Muchnick's five points on four goals and an assist paced the Orange (13-4) while Ashlee Volpe tied a career-high with four assists. Molly Guzik logged a hat trick and Bri Peters also notched her first career multi-goal game with two on the day.
Izzy Lahah set a new program single-season record with her 46th caused turnover of the year, also leading the team with three on the day. Daniella Guyette finished with five saves in the win.
Virginia (8-9) was led by Fiona Allen and Megan Rocklein, who each had two goals and an assist.
The Cavaliers struck first with a goal just one minute into the contest, but Muchnick responded with a free position goal less than a minute later to draw level at 1-1. Peters gave Syracuse its first lead of the day with just under nine minutes remaining, bouncing one in to sneak it past the goalkeeper low. Muchnick scored again with six minutes to go in the quarter to extend the lead to 3-1.
Virginia scored first in the second quarter, but Syracuse rattled off three unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead into the break. Peters scored the first, Guzik the second and the third coming from Muchnick to complete the first half hat trick.
Syracuse kept its foot on the gas in the second half, with Alexa Vogelman scoring on the first Orange possession. Virginia got one back before Guzik tallied her second goal minutes later to maintain the 8-3 cushion. The Cavaliers continued to claw back, though, scoring twice to cut the lead to 8-5. Muchnick scored her fourth goal of the game to close the quarter, heading to the fourth with a 9-5 edge.
Virginia came into the fourth quarter firing, scoring just 17 seconds into the frame. Courtney Maclay scored the Orange's 10th goal of the game one minute later, bringing the score to 10-6. Virginia scored three unanswered goals, though, bringing the score to 10-9 with 5:22 left in the game. Three minutes later, Guzik snapped the streak on an assist from Muchnick to give the Orange an 11-9 edge.
On the final Virginia possession, it was Muchnick getting it done on defense, logging the game sealing caused turnover with one minute showing.
Syracuse now advances to the ACC Semifinals to take on the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday, April 24. The game is set for a 5 p.m. start and will air on ACC Network.
