Field Hockey Announces 2006 Schedule

SYRACUSE, NY – The 2006 Syracuse University field hockey schedule consists of 20 contests that includes six Big East match-ups and four teams that finished 2005 ranked in the top 20. After beginning the year with scrimmages against Lehigh and Guelph, the Orange will open its 2006 campaign with a series of non-conference games starting at Central Michigan (Aug. 27). The Orange will then square-off with Penn. (Sept. 2), Delaware (Sept. 3), and Quinnipiac (Sept. 6).
Syracuse will begin Big East play on Sept. 15 against Rutgers, the Orange finished fourth in the Big East in 2005 with a 3-2 record. Next will be Louisville (Sept. 22), who finished last season ranked 12th nationally, followed by league newcomer Georgetown on Oct. 1. The Orange will then play defending Big East Champions Villanova (Oct. 6), who was ranked 17th in the nation in 2005. On Sept. 6, the Orange will host Providence before finishing its regular season conference play against Connecticut, who was ranked 14th in 2005, on October 21.
Other non-conference games slated for 2006 include Hofstra on Sept. 17 and Penn State on Oct. 27. Penn State finished 2005 with a national ranking of six. Also on the schedule is Vermont (Sept. 24), Massachusetts (Sept. 29), and Cornell (Oct. 24). The Orange will finish the regular season on Oct. 29 at Dartmouth.
The Big East Tournament will be the weekend of November 4-5, which will include the top four Big East finishers. Syracuse will be returning three players that were named to the 2005 Dartfish/NFHCA Division 1 All-Region Team. Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa. /Oley Valley) was named to the first-team All-Mideast Region team, while Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa. /Warwick) and Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa. /Hempfield) were named to the All-Mideast Region Second Team.
