Four Orange Earn Pre-Season Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior strong safety Dowayne Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) is a 2006 pre-season All-BIG EAST First Team honoree in The Sporting News season preview magazine. Three members of the 2006 squad, including senior linebacker Kelvin Smith, senior cornerback Tanard Jackson and senior punter Brendan Carney received second team honors.
Davis was second on the team in 2005 with 78 tackles and two interceptions. He also recorded one sack and one fumble recovery. Smith led the Orange in tackles with 84 and also had an interception and two sacks. Jackson had 42 tackles, one interception, and one fumble recovery.
Carney, a 2005 BIG EAST First Team selection, is ranked the eighth-best punter in the nation by the magazine. In 2005, he led the BIG EAST with a 42.6 yards per punt average. He currently ranks second on the Syracuse all-time punting average list (42.9) and 10th on the SU career punts list (117).

The Orange are scheduled to report to Coach Greg Robinson's preseason camp on Sunday, August 6. Syracuse will kick off the 2006 season with an away game against Wake Forest on Sept. 2. Then the team travels back to the Carrier Dome for the home opener against Iowa on Sept. 9.
