This season will mark the 10th in the history of South Florida football. During that time, the program has grown from a I-AA participant to a BIG EAST member and bowl participant. While South Florida may not have the history of Syracuse, it proved in its first season in the BIG EAST that it is a program to take notice of. On November 11, the Orange will take a trip to Tampa for the first-time ever to take on the Bulls in Raymond James Stadium, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bulls won the first-ever meeting between the two schools last season, 27-0.
In 11 days, Syracuse will take the field. Visit suathletics.com regularly for 'Countdown to Kickoff' to get an inside look at the 2006 season as the excitement builds. Studying South Florida
Head Coach
Jim Leavitt is entering his 10th year at South Florida, where he has compiled a record of 61-39. He has been the only coach in the schools history. He has served as an assistant coach at Iowa and Kansas State. Leavitt was a four-year letter winner at defensive back at Missouri (1975-78), where he also played baseball.

OFFENSE
The Bulls’ backfield has good potential, but little collegiate experience. USF lost running back Andre Hall, the leading rusher in the BIG EAST in 2005 and the Bulls’ only first team All-BIG EAST member, to graduation and will look to two inexperienced backs to replace him. Redshirt freshman Moise Plancher is slated as the starter heading
into training camp, despite the fact he has never played a down in college. Sophomore Ricky Ponton rushed for 372 yards and two touchdowns in 2005. Senior Pat Julmiste (right) will be back under center for the Bulls, after starting every game last year. Julmiste completed 124 passes for 1,489 yards; but he only threw 6 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions. Julmiste split time last season with Carlton Hill, but Hill has been moved back to his natural position of wide receiver this year. Hall was also USF’s top receiver in 2005, but the other six leading receivers return. The group is led by juniors Amarri Jackson and Jackie Chambers, who each amassed over 20 catches and 240 yards a year ago.

The USF defense lost just four starters and the top four tacklers return. The linebacking corps boasts the top three tacklers from last season in seniors Stephen Nicholas and Pat St. Louis and junior Ben Moffitt. Nicholas is a three-year starter, led the team with seven sacks and was named second team All-BIG EAST. He has been named to the Nagurski Award preseason watch list. St. Louis ranked second on the team with 90 tackles and recorded over 10 tackles three times last year. Moffitt (below) led the Bulls with 96 tackles in his first full season as a starter. The secondary has three starters returning, highlighted by junior
defensive backs Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams. Jenkins was second team All-BIG EAST and the duo each had two interceptions. Sophomore safety Danny Verpaele returns after missing all of last season with a foot injury. He was a Freshman All-American in 2004. The defensive line lost both starting ends and a tackle from a year ago.

The Bulls’ 2005 campaign was one of streaks, both winning and losing. They opened the season with a loss at Penn State followed by three-consecutive wins. Included in that streak was the program’s biggest victory, a 45-14 upset against ninth-ranked Louisville in the first BIG EAST contest for both schools. The Bulls then lost games against Miami and Pittsburgh before reeling off another three-game winning streak. Despite losing the final two games of the regular season, USF earned a spot in the program’s first ever bowl game; losing to North Carolina State in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, 14-0.
