Sacramento, Calif. – The Orange (3-10) lost a pair of matches at the Sacramento State Invitational Saturday, falling to Western Kentucky 3-0 (31-29, 30-22, 30-23) and the host Hornets 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-23).

Junior Joscie Kaup recorded 38 digs on the day, raising her career total to 1,194. She passed Danielle Bethke for fourth all-time in school history. Bethke recorded 1,174 digs from 1993 to 1996.
Sophomore Emily Kaier led the team with 11 kills against Western Kentucky while junior Cheryl Cobbina added nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore April Quigley posted a team-high 24 assists and freshman Sarah Morton led the team with six total blocks.
The first game was back-and-forth with each team gaining no more than a three-point lead. The Lady Toppers won the game on a service ace. In the second game, Western Kentucky went on a 10-3 run to seize control of the game and take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Toppers used a 10-4 run in the third game to clinch the victory.
Against Sacramento State, freshman Samantha Ainsworth led the team with 11 kills and added five digs. Cobbina posted nine kills and added 12 digs. Quigley led the team 27 assists and Kaup recorded a team-high 21 digs.
The host team used a run midway through the first game to take control. With the Orange trailing 9-8, the Hornets scored 16 of the game’s next 19 point en route to the 10-point victory. Syracuse started the second game strong, opening with a 7-2 lead. The Hornets would respond and would rally-off nine-straight points at one point to take a two-game advantage. In the third game, the Hornets raced to an early lead, scoring 18 of the game’s first 22 points, and won by a score of 30-23.
Syracuse resumes play at the University of Albany Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Orange will square-off against the host Great Danes on Friday and will then take on Middle Tennessee State and Temple on Saturday.
