
SU Continues Homestand Versus Huskies Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SU men’s soccer team (3-3-0, 0-3-0) plays its second game of a three-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 3:00 p.m. when it hosts BIG EAST Blue Division opponent Connecticut at the SU Soccer Stadium. The contest will be the first Orange men’s soccer game to have live audio and video available as part of SU’s All Access package. Head coach Dean Foti’s squad is in the midst of a three-game losing streak after starting 2006 with three consecutive wins. Each of the Orange’s losses have come against conference foes. In its most recent outing, versus Providence, on Sept. 14 the Orange lost by a goal, 3-2, when the Friars scored with four seconds remaining in regulation. It was the first defeat for SU at home this season, dropping its 2006 SU Soccer Stadium record to 2-1. The Huskies enter today’s pairing with 2-2-2 overall mark and a 2-0-1 in leage matches. After starting the season 0-2-1, Connecticut reeled of wins against Villanova and Rutgers and played St. John’s to a scoreless draw on Sept. 14.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Connecticut got off to a rough start in 2006, going 0-2-1 before posting a 2-0-1 record in its last three contests. Head coach Ray Reid, now in his 10th season at the helm, has guided the Huskies to four NCAA Championships. Their most recent national championship came in 2000. He entered this year with the highest winning percentage of any active Division I coach with at least five years of experience (.786). Reid has 284 career victories including 138 at Connecticut. Akeem Priestly (2g, 2a) is the team’s leading scorer with six points. BIG EAST 2005 Rookie of the Year O’Brian White ranks second the club with five points (2g, 1a). Matt Sangeloty has played 600 minutes in goal for the Huskies. He has 18 saves and owns a 1.35 goals against average with one shutout.
BACHER RETURNS TO SYRACUSE
Former Syracuse standout Kevin Bacher returns to the SU Soccer Stadium today. Bacher is in his fifth season as an assistant working with the goalkeepers on Ray Reid’s coaching staff. Bacher competed for the Orange from 1997-2000. He still ranks fourth on SU’s career saves list (243) and fourth on the Orange’s career wins chart (24). He was a second-team All-BIG EAST selection in 2000 and earned first-team NSCAA All-Region accolades that same season.
WOODRUFF TIES CAREER HIGH VERSUS PROVIDENCE
Freshman Hansen Woodruff matched his personal best with three points against Providence on Sept. 14. Woodruff netted the equalizer with less than two minutes to play in regulation against the Friars. He also picked up an assist on SU's opening goal of the game. He also received his first career start in the match. Woodruff ranks second on the team in scoring with six points (2g, 2a).
THE SYRACUSE-CONNECTICUT SERIES
The Huskies hold an 18-10-3 advantage in the all-time series which began in 1982. The two clubs have met at least once every season since the series began. The Huskies have won the last two meetings. The Orange’s most recent win came in 2003 by the score of 2-1. In 2000, Syracuse posted one of the most memorable victories in school history when defeated the Huskies in Storrs, 1-0, when Connecticut was ranked No. 1 in the national polls. Seven of the 31 contests between the two teams have been decided in overtime with Huskies holding a 4-0-3 edge in extra-session matches against SU.
