SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (3-5) split a pair of matches at the second day of the Big Orange Tournament. The Orange defeated New Hampshire 3-1 (30-19, 26-30, 30-21, 30-28) and lost a hard-fought match to the tournament champions San Diego State 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-26).
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (3-5) split a pair of matches at the second day of the Big Orange Tournament. The Orange defeated New Hampshire 3-1 (30-19, 26-30, 30-21, 30-28) and lost a hard-fought match to the tournament champions San Diego State 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-26).
Junior Cheryl Cobbina recorded 60 kills during the two-day tournament and was named to All-Tournament Team. Classmate Joscie Kaup posted 41 digs on the day, raising her career total to 1,112. She passed former teammates Kristen Conway and Kelly Duan into sixth all-time in school history for career digs. Conway registered 1,074 digs and Duan, the team’s current graduate assistant, recorded 1,091 career digs.
“Against San Diego State, Emily Kaier really stepped up,” said Syracuse assistant coach Carol Munger. “She had 11 kills and that was really important to keep us in the game. This afternoon against New Hampshire, Brittany Kern stepped up. She had a really good match. We were trying to push the middle as much as possible. New Hampshire nave gave up. They gave us a fight. It was good win for us.”
Cobbina and sophomores Brittany Kern and Emily Kaier each recorded double-digit kills in SU’s victory over New Hampshire. Cobbina and Kern each recorded 17 kills while Kaier added 13. Kern’s 17 kills are a new career-high, besting her previous mark of nine. She also led the team with six total blocks. Sophomore April Quigley posted a personal-best 54 assists, topping her previous mark of 36 which she set on Friday against Siena. Kaup led the team with 25 kills and freshman Cindy Hand added a career-best 10.
“I was just excited and ready to go today,” Kern said. “We definitely improved from last weekend. We have the whole team together which always helps and the chemistry is a lot better.”
Against San Diego State, Cobbina and Kaier led the team with 11 kills. Quigley recorded 31 assists while Kaup posted 16 digs.
San Diego State won the tournament after finishing the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. The Aztecs won a thrilling contest against Kentucky to take home the title, defeating the Wildcats 3-2 (30-23, 22-30, 30-35, 30-25, 15-10). San Diego State’s Audra Dent was named tournament MVP. Joining Cobbina on the all-tournament team were San Diego State’s Aime Cordiero and Stephanie Darnall, Kentucky’s Nicole Britenricker and Queen Nzenwa and Nadiege Honore from Siena.
Syracuse will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Buffalo to take on the Bulls. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
