SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Lisa Wasser scored two goals to help lift the No. 12-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 5-2 win against Syracuse today at Coyne Field. The loss drops the Orange to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Cardinal improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
“I thought we left the game mentally and against a team of this caliber if you leave the game mentally even for just five minutes you are dead and that is exactly what happened. They scored the first goal and I thought we let down and lost our confidence,” SU head coach Kathleen Parker said. “We showed in other parts of the game that we can play with a top-ranked team. I am proud of our effort in the second half. We worked harder and were more consistent.”
The teams played mostly in the midfield until the 11:00 mark in the first half when Janelle Avila tipped Countney Shepstone’s shot to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Louisville’s Jessica Javelet put a shot past Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) to increase the lead to 2-0 with nine minutes remaining in the half.
Wasser’s first goal of the game came two minutes later off a Cardinal penalty corner to push the lead to 3-0 going into halftime. The Cards outshot the Orange, 13-3, and held a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners at the break.
SU opened the scoring in the second half when freshman Michelle Davis (Lititz, Pa.) put home a shot from the top of the scoring circle at the 38:46 mark. It was Davis’ first career goal. Two minutes later UL’s Carrie Jackson scored off a rebound to make the score 4-2 with 30 minutes remaining.
Wasser converted a Cardinal penalty corner for her second goal of the day at the 67:00 mark.
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) added a late goal for the Orange to put the final score at 5-2.
Hess made 11 saves for SU. Marie-Claire Heller recoded five for Louisville.
Up next, the Orange hosts Vermont on Sunday, September 24 at 1 p.m.
