Orange Field Hockey Travels to UMass

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University field hockey team travels to Massachusetts for a game against the Minutewomen on Friday, September 29 at 3 p.m. The Orange is coming off a 3-2 loss to No. 9 Penn State on September 27 that dropped the Orange to 4-6. Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) scored two goals, but it was not enough as SU dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 9 Penn State on Wednesday at Coyne Field.
Erin O'Brien tallied a hat trick as UMass (3-7) shut out Siena, 4-0, on September 26 at Garber Field. Sarah Williams recorded a shut out in goal. UMass dominated play from the opening whistle out-shooting the Saints, 36-7, and taking 14 of the game's 17 corners. Nicole Phelan scored UMass' other goal of the game while Rachael Mervine had three assists.
SERIES WITH UMASS
This is the 16th meeting between Syracuse and UMass. The Orange hold a 9-5-1 advantage in the all-time series. SU defeated the Minutewomen, 2-0 last season in Syracuse. The Orange took home a 4-1 win last time it traveled to UMass in 2004.
CAREER HIGH
Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) scored a career-high two goals against No. 9 Penn State on September 27. Babbitt, who had no goals in 2005, has five in 2006.
ORANGE LEADERS
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) has recorded a team-best six goals and 13 points. Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) has registered a team-high four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) has seen the majority of action in the cage for the Orange and has recorded a 2.56 goals-against-average and a .633 saves percentage.
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) is ranked 47th in the country in goals per game (.067). Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) is third in penalty strokes (2.0). The Orange, as a team, are nationally ranked in six categories. SU is 44th in goals scored per game (2.0), 39th in goals-against-average (2.12), 43rd in won-lost-tied percentage (.444), 41st in assists (1.0), 27th in penalty corners per game (6.89) and 50th in points (5.0).
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) was honored as the Syracuse University Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 25. Ryan, who hails Lancaster, Pa., has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll on six occasions and was selected to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team three times. She is majoring in inclusive education and sociology.
SCOUTING UMASS
The Minutewomen are led in scoring by Lauren Gillespie’s eight goals for 16 points. Rachael Mervin has recorded a team-best four assists. Becky Letournear has seen the majority of action in the cage and currently holds a 3.23 goals-against-average and a .560 saves percentage.
