SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange (3-0) begins the BIG EAST portion of its schedule with a pair of road league contests this weekend. SU will play at inter-division rival Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 8 at 3:00 p.m. On its way back to New York, the Orange will stop off at The New Jersey Institute of Technology for another divisional cross-over game against Seton Hall on Sunday, Sept. 10 at
The Orange carries a 3-0 record into this weekend’s contests and won its only road match of the year on Sept. 1, rallying from a 2-0, second-half deficit to beat Loyola, 3-2, in overtime. SU also has home victories against Niagara (3-1) and Albany (2-0). In its most recent outing, the Orange recorded its first shutout of the year, blanking the Great Danes on Sept. 4. Sophomore forward Kyle Hall tallied his team-leading fourth goal in the contest. He has scored at least once in each of SU’s three matches and is averaging 1.33 goals per game. Last year’s leading scorer Pete Rowley also found the goals column on the scoresheet against the Great Danes, netting his first goal of 2006 in the match. Sophomore keeper Robert Cavicchia made three saves against Albany to earn the seventh shutout of his career and his first blanking of the season.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The Georgetown Hoyas are 1-3 under first-year coach Brian Wiese and have lost their last three contests after starting the season with a 5-2 victory against George Washington at the D.C. College Cup hosted by American University. The Hoyas have had four different goals scorers this season. Daniel Grasso, Ricky Schramm, Mike Glaccum and Conor Neusel all have tallies for Georgetown. Grasso is the team’s leading scorer with three goals. He has come off the bench in all four matches and netted one goal in each of the Hoyas’ first three contests. Schramm and Glaccum each have two goals on the season. Andrw Keszler has earned the majority of the playing time goal. He owns an overall record of 1-2 and has 10 saves in 2006.
After losing its first two games of the year, Seton Hall has won its last two contests (vs. Adelphi and Monmouth) to even its record at 2-2. Rookie goalkeeper Paul McHenry started in net in the Pirates’ two victories, allowing just one goal in the two matches on his way to BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. McHenry replaced keeper Ian Joyce who started the first two matches in net, both Pirates losses. McHenry has three saves and owns a 0.50 goals against average. Joyce holds a 1.85 GAA and has 11 saves. Seton Hall’s triumph against Adelphi was the 200th career win for Pirates’ head coach Manfred Schellscheidt. He is 201-120-36 in 19 seasons. John Raus leads the club with six points (2g, 2a). Eliseo Giusfredi also has two goals for Seton Hall on the year.
THE SYRACUSE-GEORGETOWN SERIES
The Orange and the Hoyas have met 14 times since 1990, including 11 consecutive meetings from 1990-2000. Georgetown holds the advantage in the series with an 8-5-1 mark against SU. The Hoyas have won the two most recent pairings between the two clubs. The Hoyas own the longest winning streak in the series with four straight wins from 1991-94. Three of the 14 matches have been decided in overtime, including a 3-2 Orange victory in 2002. The two teams are 2-2-1 in the last five meetings.
THE SYRACUSE-SETON HALL SERIES
Seton Hall owns the series advantage against the Orange, 13-3-3. SU’s last victory against the Pirates came in 1999 when the Orange handed Seton Hall a 2-1 loss at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Pirates won the first seven pairings in the series, including BIG EAST Tournament wins against the Orange in 1986 and 1989. Seton Hall outscored Syracuse, 24-6 in those contests. Four of the 19 matches between the two teams have gone into overtime with three ending in ties and SU posting a 3-2, double-overtime win in 1993.
