Binghamton, N.Y..- The Syracuse women’s soccer team snapped its three game losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Binghamton in double overtime on Wednesday. The Orange had fallen to o-3 to start the season for the first time. Freshman midfielder Danielle Jordan (Lafayette, La.) scored her first career goal with 11 seconds left in the first half to give the Orange its first lead and first tally of the season. Sophomore midfielder Samantha Hawn (Spencerport, N.Y.) assisted on the goal, crossing a free kick into the box where Jordan collected it and scored from eight yards out.
The Orange played tight defense the rest of the game, limiting the Bearcats to five shots in the second half. With just over two minutes left in the game, Binghamton was able to crack the scoreboard on a goal by junior forward Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.). Syracuse freshman forward Tessa MacDougall (Surrey, British Columbia) had a chance at the end of the second overtime, but the Binghamton goalie made a diving save to keep the game tied. Junior goalie Candice Hofmann (Marcellus, N.Y.) made six saves in goal for the Orange in the second double overtime game of her career. The Orange outshot Binghamton 23-11 in the contest.
“We were more dangerous tonight,” Syracuse head coach Pat Farmer said. “From about 17 minutes in through midway through the second half we were definitely the better team. It is promising to get our first goal and to get the draw, but a little disappointing at the same time because we felt like we should have won that game.”
The Orange will participate in the Illinois Tournament this weekend in Champaign. Syracuse takes on host Illinois Friday at 8:30 p.m. and Portland State Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
