The Syracuse women’s rowing team is back in Syracuse, preparing for the challenges ahead during the 2007 season. The team was able to experience valuable training time and nice weather as the team traveled to Melbourne, Florida for its annual winter training session.
“Our nine-day trip to Melbourne was very productive and probably one of our best in terms of the amount of work we were able to get done,” said Syracuse head coach Kris Sanford. “It was very windy - we were in the manatee channel 40 percent of the time, which is a long straight channel that is a no wake zone so coach’s launches cannot follow, but the athletes handled it very well and stayed focused on what they were doing.”
The team practiced using various lineups and situations. The different scenarios helped determine the strengths of the team and helped the coaching staff evaluate how to improve the 2007 crews.
“The varsity rowed pairs and fours for the first half of the week and then got into 8's at the end,” Sanford said. “Any kind of small boat rowing we can do is very productive as it forces people to work on their technique and boat feel. You can hide in an 8, but not in a pair. The freshman worked with Coach Cannon on technique, focus and endurance and really felt like they came out of camp a different crew than went into camp.”
Members of the team found the trip to be very useful as the training sessions helped bring the team together and improved their skills and techniques.
"I really felt that the winter training in Melbourne this year brought us together as a team both on and off the water,” said sophomore Kate Todd. “The practices were more strenuous than on previous training trips so we needed each other for support more so than in the past. Rowing in Melbourne is always fun because it offers two options- the Banana River which is good for doing longer race pieces with multiple boats, and the manatee channel which is good for working on technique."
The trip was not all work on the water. The team participated in nightly exercises, both physically and team-building. The team was also able to enjoy some of the fun in the sun that Florida offers.
“Besides rowing, the team did a nightly ‘team run’ to the beach, along with some team building exercises after dinner," Sanford said. "The week ended with a trip to Disney for those who wanted to go and a nice day laying out poolside for those who didn't!”
Todd believes that through the numerous activities the Orange participated in, the winter training trip will prove to be very beneficial throughout the 2007 season. The women’s rowing team now resumes its regular training schedule in Syracuse before hitting the road once again for its spring training session. This year, Syracuse will travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee from March 9 to 17, which is also the host of the 2007 NCAA Championship.
