
Befort BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week; Hess Named to Honor Roll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Two Syracuse field hockey players earned BIG EAST accolades after the Orange enjoyed a 2-0 week with victories against Georgetown and No. 12 American. Freshman midfielder Maggie Befort earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors after pacing the SU offense and junior goalkeeper Heather Hess was named to the BIG EAST honor roll for two solid performances in the cage for the Orange.
Befort scored two goals in SU’s 8-1 victory versus Georgetown, and contributed another two goals in the 3-1 Orange win at No. 12 American. Her four goals over the weekend improved her season total to 10 and broke a 25-year old school record for goals scored by a freshman. Befort also tied the SU freshman record for points in a season with 25.
Befort currently leads the Orange in goals (10) and points. She ranks second in the BIG EAST conference in points per game (2.08) and fourth in goals per game (0.83).
Hess was brilliant in the cage for Syracuse during the weekend, recording 14 saves while allowing only one goal in two games. Hess tallied three saves and shut out the Hoyas during her time in the cage at Georgetown. She was instrumental in the Orange victory at No. 12 American recording 11 saves while holding the Eagles to one goal.
Hess improved to 5-2 on the season after helping to secure the two victories for SU. She currently ranks second in the BIG EAST conference in save percentage (.809) and third in saves per game (5.00).
The two wins improve the Orange to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST conference play. Syracuse travels to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
