STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Orange men’s lacrosse team posted a pair of victories in its only action of the fall season. Syracuse defeated Stony Brook, 13-11, and Penn, 14-8, in a three-way scrimmage hosted by the Seawolves on Long Island Saturday, Oct. 13. Attackmen Greg Niewieroski (Watertown, N.Y.) and Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) led the way for the Orange. Niewieroski had seven goals in the two games and Leveille finished with eight points (1g, 7a) on the day.
Niewieroski paced the Orange with four goals against Stony Brook and added three against Penn. Leveille registered a goal and an assist versus the Seawolves and dished out a team-best six assists versus the Quakers.
“I thought we did a lot of things well today,” Niewieroski said. “We stuck to the game plan, got good looks and finished.”
The Orange offense scored in bunches in its opening game. SU tallied 10 of its 13 goals in the second and fourth quarters. The Orange offense got five scores in the second period to take a 6-4 lead at the half, and scored five times in the final quarter to hold off the charging Seawolves.
Freshman Stephen Keogh (Toronto, Ontario) made an impact in his first taste of collegiate competition. He was SU’s second-leading scorer with three goals versus Stony Brook. Junior Kenny Nims (Watertown, N.Y.) contributed a goal and an assist for the victors.
“I thought Keogh played very well,” Niewieroski said of his fellow attackman. “He wasn’t afraid to attack the cage and did a good job finishing.”
Sophomore Al Cavalieri (Lathrup Village, Mich.) started in the cage for SU. He played the first two quarters and made six saves. He was replaced by rookie John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.), who made two saves in the second half.
Senior face-off specialist Danny Brennan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was 8-for-9 on draws to help maintain possession for the Orange.
In the second game, SU blitzed Penn, scoring 11 times in the first half on its way to a six-goal triumph. The Orange got five in the first quarter and six in the second to take an 11-3 advantage at the break. The Quakers outscored SU in the second half, 5-3, but the eight-goal halftime deficit was too much to make up.
Leveille was masterful at setting up his teammates and recorded six assists in the contest. Niewieroski was again on the receiving end as he finished with a hat trick. Nims also scored twice and had an assist.
Galloway got the start in goal against the Quakers. He made six saves in the first half, including four in the opening quarter. Cavalieri relieved him at halftime and stopped seven shots in the third and fourth periods.
Saturday’s scrimmages brought an end to SU’s six-week fall season. The team will now head indoors to begin its off-season conditioning program in preparation for the 2008 campaign.
