"We're getting ready for Buffalo and looking forward to a game in the Dome," Robinson said. "It will be an interesting affair. Buffalo is having a very good season. Obviously, winning the last couple of games here and doing it in a fine fashion. As you watch them both offensively and defensively, they've been productive. I think they will be an excellent challenge for our football team."
Saturday's honorary captain represents the history and tradition of Syracuse football. Gerhard Schwedes, the team captain and leading scorer of the1959 national championship squad, will join the Orange for the honorary captain activities, including addressing the team on Friday, participating in the Quad Walk and coin toss on Saturday. Schwedes' 16 touchdowns during the '59 season was a single-season school record at the time and ranks fourth in SU’s season record list today.
"Gerhard is another example of the great tradition here at Syracuse," said head coach Greg Robinson. "We talk about it all the time that we stand on the shoulders of those before us and Gerhard will be a great honorary captain for us."
Lettering from 1956-59, Schwedes amassed 927 rushing yards on 173 attempts, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. He led the team in rushing during the 1958 season with 360 yards on 83 carries. As part of a three-headed rushing attack, which also included Ernie Davis and Art Baker, Schwedes rushed for 567 yards on 90 attempts, averaging 6.3 yards per carry in 1959.
The '59 squad averaged 39 points per game and shut out five of its opponents en route to finishing the regular season 10-0. A 23-14 victory against Texas in the Cotton Bowl secured the Orange's first football national championship.
