Orange Gains Ground with 3-1 Win Against Marquette

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse volleyball team gained critical ground in the BIG EAST standings with a 3-1 win against Marquette on Saturday in the Women's Building. The Orange evened its conference mark at 4-4 behind a team-high 19 kills from senior Cheryl Cobbina.
"We did a good job of executing what we talked about before the match," said second-year Syracuse assistant coach Carol LaMarche. "The team knew how important today's match was for the season. They were energized with every point."
Sophomores Kacie MacTavish and Sarah Morton aided the Orange offensive attack with 18 and 14 kills, respectively. Junior Brittany Kern and freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis each added seven.
For the second time in as many outings, redshirt-junior April Quigley guided the Syracuse offense with a team-high 54 assists.
Defensively, senior Joscie Kaup led the Orange with a club-leading 15 digs. Quigley totaled nine digs while MacTavish and Cobbina contributed eight. Morton paced the Orange at the net with a team-high five total blocks. Cobbina and Kaup each tallied four service aces.
Syracuse (13-10, 4-4) raced to a one-game advantage after posting a 30-26 win in the first frame. MacTavish powered the Orange offense with a team-best five kills while Cobbina added four. Quigley tallied 14 assists.
After Marquette evened the match at one game apiece, SU regained a one-game lead that it would never relinquish. Syracuse's 30-21 win in game three was led by four kills from Morton.
The Orange continues its season-best eight-match homestand on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. against non-conference foe Long Island in the Women's Building.
