SYRACUSE – Senior Cheryl Cobbina posted her 10th double-double of the season and sophomore Sarah Morton collected nine total blocks, including a career-high seven solo stuffs, Syracuse captured its fourth win in the last five outings with a 3-1 triumph against Long Island on Sunday in the Women’s Building. With the win, the Orange improves its record to 5-0 this season against teams from the state of New York.
“Our defense was great today,” said second-year Syracuse assistant coach Carol LaMarche. “We kept their attack under control and defense never relented. Overall, it was a great weekend defensively.”
Morton's seven solo blocks improves her season total to 54 and places her in sole possession of second-place all-time on the Orange single-season ledger.
Cobbina led the Syracuse offense with a team-high 19 kills while adding 11 digs. Junior Brittany Kern contributed to the Orange attack with 11 kills on just 16 attacks. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish paired 10 kills with 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. The Syracuse offense boasted a .338 attack percentage.
Redshirt-junior April Quigley totaled a team-high 45 assists and added 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
Five players for the Orange collected at least 10 digs with senior Joscie Kaup’s team-best 14 leading the way. Sophomore Shanetha McLaurin tallied 10 digs.
Cobbina paced SU to a 30-13 win in game after tallying a team-high five kills. Morton led the Orange defense with a team-high five solo blocks while adding two or her nine kills. Quigley guided the offenseive attack with 10 helpers.
The Orange put the Blackbirds on the cusp of a three-game sweep with a 30-23 win in the second frame. Cobbina’s six kills led the way as seven members of the Orange tallied at least one dig on the defensive end. Quigley paired a team-high seven assist with five digs.
Long Island’s glimmer of hope after a 30-25 win in game three was short-lived. The Orange responded to the Blackbirds threat of a five-game match with a 30-20 win in game four. Cobbina led the Orange again with six kills while Kern collected four. Syracuse closed out the Blackbirds behind a .500 attack percentage and 17 assists from Quigley.
The Orange continues a brief non-conference three-match homestand on Tuesday, October 23 with a twin-bill against Colgate (4:00 p.m.) and Cornell (7:00 p.m.) in the Women’s Building. Syracuse returns to BIG EAST action on Saturday, October 27 against West Virginia.
