Syracuse University women's lacrosse coach Gary Gait has named Maggie Koch to his coaching staff. Koch, a standout goalkeeper at Georgetown, comes to the Orange just one year removed from an award-winning senior season with the Hoyas.
“Maggie is a great addition to our staff,” Gait said. “She had a great deal of success at Georgetown and earned All-America honors. We will utilize her coaching abilities to develop our exceptional young goalies.
After transferring to Georgetown after one year at Drexel University, Koch earned the starting spot her junior year. That year she was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and collected first-team All-American honors. Additionally, Koch was a Tewaaraton award nominee, and was named the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year. She led the nation in save percentage and ranked second in goals against average. In her senior year, Koch, a team captain, again earned the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year award. She was also selected to the 2007 All-BIG EAST First Team and was a first-team regional All-America selection. During her time at Georgetown, the Hoyas won or shared the BIG EAST regular-season title three times – in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
In addition to her accomplishments on the field, Koch has devoted her time off of the field to young lacrosse players. She has spent her last four summers as a lacrosse camp counselor, working on skill development in young players, especially goalkeepers.
Koch, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown in May of 2007.
The Orange is coming off its most successful year in the program's history. Syracuse posted a 13-6 record, won the inaugural BIG EAST Tournament, and recorded its first ever NCAA Tournament win with a victory against Vanderbilt in the first round.
