Orange Aids Playoff Push with 3-0 Sweep at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA – Behind a team-best 14 kills from senior Cheryl Cobbina and junior Brittany Kern, the Orange captured its sixth straight win with a convincing 3-0 sweep at BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Cobbina paired the 14 kills with 12 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish also tallied her 12th double-double of the season, and second in as many days, after collecting 12 kills and adding 10 digs.
Redshirt-junior April Quigley’s team-best 45 assists led an Orange offense that totaled a .326 attack percentage. Quigley’s 10 digs completed her eighth double-double of the 2007 campaign.
Sophomore Sarah Morton coupled eight kills with a team-high seven total blocks, including two solo stuffs. Morton’s .500 attack percentage ranked second for the Orange behind Kern’s club-leading .565 clip.
Kern’s 14 kills, on just 23 attacks, matches a season-best. The junior aided the Orange defense with three total blocks.
Defensively, senior Joscie Kaup’s team-high 21 digs led four SU players with at least 10. Sophomore Shanetha McLaurin added seven digs.
Syracuse (18-10, 6-4) raced out to a one-game advantage after a 30-24 win in the first set. After a resounding 30-18 triumph in game two, the Orange closed out the Panthers and took one step closer to the 2007 BIG EAST Tournament with a 30-27 win in game three.
The Orange continues a four-match BIG EAST road swing on Saturday, November 3 against No. 23 St. John’s at 2:00 p.m.
