SYRACUSE, N.Y. – As the end of October nears, postseason action looms for several Orange teams. The Syracuse men and women’s cross country teams finished fifth and fourth, respectively, at the 2007 BIG EAST Championship hosted by Louisville. The Orange field hockey team concluded the 2007 regular season schedule against Cornell and will prepare for the approaching BIG EAST Championship. The Syracuse rowing team began the 2007-08 season with a strong showing at the Princeton Chase. The SU men’s soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive with a 1-0 shutout win against No. 22 USF. The Orange women’s soccer squad concluded the 2007 season following a 2-0 loss against No. 18 Connecticut. The SU men and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the BIG EAST schedule with a dual-meet loss against Pittsburgh. The Syracuse tennis squad wrapped up the 2007 fall season at the Big Green Invitational hosted by Dartmouth. The Orange volleyball team is currently riding a season-best six-match win streak following a double-header sweep against Colgate (3/1) and Cornell (3-1), and a pair of three-game shutouts against BIG EAST foes West Virginia and Pittsburgh.
Cross Country
Junior Nana Sang-Bender earned All-BIG EAST recognition for the second straight year after a fifth-place finish powered the Orange women to a program-best fourth-place performance at the 2007 BIG EAST Championship. Sang-Bender becomes the first SU female to earn all-conference honors at consecutive championships since Alicia Hauber in 1982 and 1983. Junior Jeff Scull and sophomore Dan Busby garnered all-conference distinction with 11th and 14th-place finishes, respectively, led the SU men to a fifth-place tally at the BIG EAST Championship.

Field Hockey (12-6, 3-3)
The 19th-ranked Orange field hockey team completed the 2007 regular season with a 3-2 loss against non-conference foe Cornell on Thursday. Seniors Jessica Lerew and Brittany Angellella tallied the two scores for the Orange. Junior Heather Hess and freshman Christina Puggi combined to stop seven shots in the cage. Syracuse earned the BIG EAST Tournament’s four seed and will meet first-seeded Connecticut on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m.

The Orange rowing team began the 2007-08 season with an impressive showing at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. The Syracuse “A” men’s heavyweight placed eighth with a time of 13:32.998. The SU “A” and “B” men’s heavyweight four finished 11th (15:31.128) and 12th (15:31.755), respectively.

Men’s Soccer (6-6-4, 3-6-0)
The Syracuse men’s soccer team kept its BIG EAST postseason hopes alive with a critical 1-0 shutout win against No. 22 USF on Saturday. Sophomore Hansen Woodruff’s team-leading 10th goal of the season just under five minutes after the first whistle proved to be the game-winner. Junior Robert Cavicchia needed four saves for his fourth shutout of the season. Cavicchia is tied for fourth all-time with 14 career blankings. The Orange will play its final home match of the season live on ESPNU, the program’s first on national television, on Wednesday, October 31 against St. John’s at 7:00 p.m.

Women’s Soccer (7-8-4, 3-6-2)
The Syracuse women’s soccer team finished tied for fifth in the BIG EAST American Division, but failed to qualify for the postseason tournament after losing a tie-breaker with South Florida. The Orange concluded the regular season with a 2-0 loss against No. 18 Connecticut on Sunday. Sophomore netminder Eliza Bennett-Hatten collected six saves for Syracuse in the loss.

Tennis
The Syracuse tennis team concluded the 2007 fall season at the three-day Big Green Invitational hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. Sophomore Ashley Spicer paced the Orange attack with a first-place finish in flight #7 singles. The freshmen duo of Emily Mauser and Ally Wickman captured the first-place crown in flight #4 doubles. The Orange resumes the 2007-08 season on Friday, January 25 against BIG EAST foe Cincinnati.

Volleyball (18-10, 6-4)
Syracuse’s all-time winningest volleyball coach Jing Pu collected his 400th career coaching victory on Saturday after a 3-0 sweep against West Virginia. The Orange improved its BIG EAST record to 6-4 with a 3-0 win against Pittsburgh and now stands tied with Cincinnati and South Florida for the conference tournament’s five seed. The Orange paired a doubleheader sweep against Colgate and Cornell with the wins against the Mountaineers and the Panthers and is now riding a season-high six-match win streak.
