Cobbina, MacTavish Tally Double-Doubles in Five-Game Loss to Bulls

SYRACUSE – Sophomore Kacie MacTavish posted her ninth double-double of the season and senior Cheryl Cobbina collected her eighth in the Orange’s 3-2 dramatic loss against South Florida on Friday night in Manley Field House. MacTavish paired 14 kills with 10 digs while Cobbina recorded 14 kills and 12 digs.
“From tonight, I think we learned that we need to be more disciplined when it comes to preparation and execution,” said second-year assistant coach Carol LaMarche. “It’s important for us to make adjustments and execute adjustments in the middle of a game. We’ll take what we learned tonight for Sunday against Georgetown and moving forward.”
Cobbina’s 14 kills surpassed former SU player Anne Parisien (1989-91) and moved her into sole possession of seventh-place all-time on the SU career kills chart.
Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis matched Cobbina and MacTavish’s team-high with a career-best 14 kills. Redshirt-junior April Quigley paced the SU offense with team-high 45 assists while adding 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season . Senior Joscie Kaup’s shared a team-best with Cobbina in totaling 12 digs. Sophomore Sarah Morton coupled 10 kills with a club-best six total blocks and a .353 attack percentage.
The Orange trailed by as much as 9-5 in the decisive fifth game before battling back to even the scoring at 11. Cobbina and MacTavish led the SU attack with two kills as USF collected four of the final five points scored in a 15-12 game-five win. Quigley collected a team-high five assists. The loss for the Orange was the first in Manley Field House this season.
Syracuse (10-9, 1-3) took a one-game advantage after posting a 30-27 win in game three. Stanislovaitis and Cobbina powered the Orange offense with four kills each while Quigley served up 10 assists in the win. Cobbina paced the SU defense with four digs while sophomore Shanetha McLaurin and MacTavish tallied three.
The Orange raced to a one-game lead after a 30-26 win in the first stanza. Five SU players tallied at least one kill while Cobbina, Morton and Stanislovaitis led the way with three apiece. Quigley totaled 12 assists.
Syracuse returns to the hardwood and remains at home for the season’s final match in Manley Field House on Sunday against BIG EAST foe Georgetown at 2:00 p.m. Orange volleyball fans can follow the action via live stats or through Orange All Access, the athletic department’s multimedia package.
