SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior April Quigley dished a team-high 35 assists, collected 12 digs and fell just short of a triple-double with eight kills as Syracuse snapped a three-match skid with a clean sweep of Georgetown on Sunday in Manley Field House. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the Orange offense with a team-high 14 kills.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior April Quigley dished a team-high 35 assists, collected 12 digs and fell just short of a triple-double with eight kills as Syracuse snapped a three-match skid with a clean sweep of Georgetown on Sunday in Manley Field House. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the Orange offense with a team-high 14 kills.
“April had a really good day offensively,” said second-year assistant coach Carol LaMarche. “Her sets were on and she was an offensive threat to the other team. It really helps our offense when April can play this well. Their middle blockers are forced to pay more attention to her, which frees up our outside hitters.”
Quigley paired her fifth double-double of the season, and second in as many games, with a season-high eight kills. She has paced the Orange offensive attack in assists 14 times this season.
The Orange’s season-high .393 attack percentage was aided junior by Brittany Kern’s 12 kills. Sophomore Kacie MacTavish added nine and sophomore Sarah Morton buried eight. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis, one of three SU players to collect 14 kills on Friday, added three.
Defensively, senior Joscie Kaup led SU with a team-best 20 digs while MacTavish recorded eight. Morton paced the Orange at the net with a team-high five total blocks. Kaup’s team-high three service aces improves her career total to 156, ranking fourth on the SU all-time charts.
Syracuse (11-9, 2-3) raced to a one-game advantage against the Hoyas behind a 30-15 win and a .565 attack percentage in the first set. Cobbina and MacTavish powered the SU attack with a team-leading four kills. Kern added three kills on just three attacks.
Georgetown responded in game two and forced a 29-29 deadlock before a Cobbina kill and subsequent Hoyas’ attack error handed the Orange a two-game edge. Cobbina totaled eight of her kills in the second frame while the trio of Kern, MacTavish and Morton collected four apiece.
Quigley spurred the Orange to a 2-0 lead in game three with back-to-back service aces. The Orange would never peer in the rear-view mirror again as the lead grew to 14-4 and 25-15 late in the stanza. Kern led the Orange with five kills as Quigley tallied four.
Syracuse continues its season-long eight-match homestand on Friday, October 12 against BIG EAST foe DePaul at 7:00 p.m. The meeting with the Blue Demons marks the first match this season played in SU Women’s Building. The Orange enjoys a 156-56-4 record in the Women’s Building dating back to 1980.
