CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After the first day of competition at the Janis Hape Nike Cup Invitational hosted by North Carolina, the women’s swimming and diving team is in sixth place with 54 points, while the men are in seventh with 52 points. Joining Syracuse and North Carolina in the event are Clemson, East Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia and Yale.
The top performer for the women’s team was freshman Natalie Mazzetta, who recorded her best time of the season in the 500 Free (4:54.04), placing her seventh.
SU finished 10th in both relay events. The group of sophomores Carolyn Delkus and Katelyn Schumacher teamed up with freshman Stephanie Kuczynski and Katlin O’Hara in the 200 Free Relay (1:38.24). In the 400 Medley Relay, O’Hara was joined with Mazzetta, junior Catrina Roth and sophomore Masha Glukhova (3:52.45).
On the men’s side, junior Alex Taraskin posted his best time of the season in the 500 Free (4:32.07) for fourth place. Also posting a season-best time was freshman Kuba Kotynia in the 200 IM (1:55.40), good enough for 12th place.
In relay action, junior Matthew Brock, sophomore Ryan Corcoran, sophomore Boldizsar Kiss and freshman Berk Kahraman combined for 12th place in the 200 Free Relay (1:26.20). Corcoran and Kahraman joined junior Peter Gollands and Glenn Kalata in the 400 Medlay Relay for 12th place.
Competition continues Saturday with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
