SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse Athletics would like to thank the fans of Syracuse field hockey that helped the Orange rank in the top 10 nationally in game attendance this season. An average attendance of 271 people came to see the women play at J.S. Coyne Stadium throughout this season.
The attendance numbers can be connected to the success of the team on the field. First-year Orange head coach Ange Bradley led the Orange to a record of 12-7, 3-3 in the BIG EAST. SU participated in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2005 and its national ranking of No. 18 on October 9 and 16 were the highest since October of 2004. If the Orange were unable to come out on top, they were always in the middle of the action as four of the Orange's losses were by one goal.
Six Orange student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll throughout the course of the season. Freshman Maggie Befort had what could be considered the best freshman season in Syracuse field hockey history. Her 35 points are the fourth most in a single-season, and are the most recorded by an Orange player since 2001. Her 35 points and 12 goals are the most scored by a freshman. Senior Gloria Nantulya moved to the offensive end and helped the Orange offense explode. Her 30 points are the eighth most on SU's single-season scoring list. Befort and Nantulya are only the second pair of Syracuse players to record 30 or more points in the same season.
Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American Leigh Fawcett also made historic contributions on the field this season. Her 15 assists are the second most in a single season. She and Befort are also only the second pair of SU players to record 11 or more assists in the same season.
Defensively, junior back Heather Doran was Syracuse’s on-the-field general this season. The junior recorded all three of SU’s defensive saves as well as one assist. Junior goalkeeper Heather Hess saw the majority of action in the cage and registered seven victories while recording a 2.10 goals against-average and a .754 saves percentage.
