HAMILTON, N.Y. – Orange senior forward Fantasia Goodwin recorded her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career by posting a career and game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds in the women’s basketball 75-26 victory at instate foe Colgate on Wednesday night. Syracuse improved to 3-1 with its second consecutive victory, while Colgate goes to 1-4.
The Red Raiders led for a brief 26 seconds early in the game, which was the first time in SU’s last two outings that it found itself trailing.
“We did a good job of getting up and down the floor today,” said head coach Quentin Hillsman. “We wanted to get out and pressure a little bit and force the tempo and we did a great job of doing that. I thought that our ball pressure was good; we did have a few breakdowns still and we have to guard the ball better a little bit, but over all a “w” is a “w” and I’ll take it.”
The Orange had 11 different scorers in the game. Behind Goodwin was freshman guard Erica Morrow, who tallied 11. Sophomore forward Nicole Michael posted nine and sophomore guard Anne Marie Boidock registered a career-high eight.
Junior guard Chandrea Jones had a career-high 11 rebounds, helping the Orange outrebound the Red Raiders 59-33. It marked the third game this season Syracuse posted 50 or more rebounds in an outing.
After a defensive struggle for the first six minutes in which both teams traded a pair of buckets, the Orange blew the game wide open by going on a 24-4 run that lasted 6:38. SU had five different scorers during the streak, including Morrow who produced seven points and Goodwin who had six. Jones started the run at 13:57 and ended it at 6:41 with the score at 25-8.
The Red Raiders only added three points before the Orange went on a 10-0 run to move ahead 37-13. The run, which started at 5:12 and ended at 1:13, consisted of 10 SU free throws by five different performers. A late hoop by the Colgate’s Sami Koslowski sent the game into the break at 37-15.
The 37 points were the most by Hillsman’s group in the first half since it produces 43 against Loyola in a 77-70 win at the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 19 of last year.
Goodwin led the way in the first with nine points off the bench. Morrow was just behind her with seven points and Murray pulled down a team-best six boards. The Orange forced 11 turnovers, while only giving up the rock four times.
The Orange wasted no time out of the gate in the second by going on an 8-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Michael – the Orange’s first 3-pointer of the contest. SU moved ahead by 30 (45-15) after Jones capped the run at 17:14.
Goodwin had an eight-point streak of her own between 11:39 and 9:21, moving the Orange ahead by 41 points (61-20).
A three-pointer by Boidock with 33 seconds remaining in the game gave the Orange its largest lead of the game (49) and produced the final score, 75-26. It was the largest margin of victory for the Orange since it defeated Long Island 96-34 during the 1998-99 season.
For the game, the Orange shot 37.1 percent (26-70) from the floor, 18.8 percent (3-16) from behind the arc and 80.0 percent (20-25) from the line. SU owned the paint with 42 points in the lane and 21 second-chance tallies.
Syracuse limited Colgate to 15.7 percent (8-for-51) from the field. Senior forward Caitlin Gillard and sophomore guard Katie Garman each posted a team-high six points. Freshman forwards Kendra Brim and Georgia Gier led the way with 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Orange returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 for a 2:00 p.m. ET match up with Eastern Kentucky at the Taco Bell Warhawk Classic in Monroe, La.
