Syracuse is coming off its best defensive effort of the season, allowing only 11 second half points en route to a 75-26 victory at Colgate. The 26 points was the lowest total the Orange has allowed since the 1972-73 season and the 49-point margin of victory is SU’s largest since a 96-34 victory over Long Island during the 1998-99 season. The Orange held Colgate to only 15.7 percent from the field for the game and forced 21 Red Raider turnovers.
SU continued its dominance on the glass against Colgate, outrebounding the Red Raiders 59 to 33, including a 23-9 advantage on the offensive boards. For the season, Syracuse holds a 206 to 151 rebounding advantage over its opponents.
Through four games this season, Syracuse continues to feature a balanced scoring attack as four Orange players average double-digits. Senior forward Fantasia Goodwin leads the team with 14.3 points per game followed by freshman guard Erica Morrow with 12.5. Sophomore forward Nicole Michael averages 11.0, while junior guard Chandrea Jones adds 10.5.
Goodwin dazzled with the best offensive performance of her career against Colgate, scoring a personal-best 25 points. The 6-0 forward, averaging a double-double for the season, added a team-high 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Goodwin leads the BIG EAST with 34 offensive rebounds and her 10.3 rebounds per game ranks second in the conference.
Morrow continued a strong freshman campaign with 11 points against the Red Raiders on 4-6 shooting. Three days earlier against Lehigh, the 5-8 guard tallied eight points, four assists, two steals and pulled down six rebounds, including a personal-best five defensive boards.
Michael has been a force in Syracuse openers. The Queens, N.Y. native posted 12 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener against Coppin State. In the team’s home debut versus Lehigh, Michael paced the Orange with a career-high 18 points and added eight rebounds.
Saturday’s matchup marks the first time the Orange has faced Eastern Kentucky. The Lady Colonels are 3-0 on the season for the first-time since 1996-97 after victories against West Virginia Tech (90-59), Valparaiso (66-64) and Florida Gulf Coast (74-56). The team is led by senior Ashley Cazee. The 5-8 guard averages 17.0 points per game and was named tournament MVP of the FGCU Classic after a 26-point performance in the championship game against Florida Gulf Coast. Crystal Jones averages 13.7 points and leads the Lady Colonels with 8.0 rebounds per game. The Indianapolis native recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the team’s opener against West Virginia Tech.
