SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's lacrosse team will face three teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last season, including both national finalists, in 2008. The Orange will play eight games in the Carrier Dome, beginning with Canisius in its season opener on Wednesday, February 20.
Highlighting the Orange’s home schedule is a showdown with three-time defending national champion Northwestern on Monday, March 24. Last season the Wildcats defeated Syracuse, 14-9, in the national quarterfinals. In addition, SU hosts Hofstra, the Colonial Athletic Association champion a year ago, on March 9. In its first road contest of the season, Syracuse will face national runner-up Virginia on March 1.
The defending BIG EAST Tournament champion, Syracuse will play two conference games at home this season, including a March 22 contest against Connecticut. The Orange hosts Georgetown on April 5 in a rematch of last year’s conference tournament finalists. SU plays at Notre Dame (March 16), Rutgers (April 12) and Loyola (April 19) in league play.
"We have a very tough schedule," said first-year head coach Gary Gait. "Six of our opponents finished in the top 15 in the final RPI rankings."
The Orange’s remaining home schedule includes contests against Dartmouth (February 24), Binghamton (March 4), Towson (March 19), and Colgate (April 16). SU goes on the road to take on Cincinnati (March 30) and Cornell (April 22). The BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled for April 25 and 27 in South Bend, Ind.
Syracuse posted its most successful season in the program’s history in 2007. The Orange finished the season with a 13-6 record, won the inaugural BIG EAST Tournament, and recorded its first-ever NCAA Tournament win with a victory against Vanderbilt in the first round.
