Uniondale, N.Y.-Graduate student Alida DiPlacido won the women’s one-meter dive on the second day of competition at the BIG EAST Championship. DiPlacido won the event with a score of 283.00 in the finals after posting a top score of 278.75 in the preliminaries. DiPlacido is only the second Syracuse woman diver to win a BIG EAST championship. Betsy Spiegel won the one-meter and three-meter events in 1983, the first year Syracuse’s women’s team competed at the BIG EAST Championship. DiPlacido can match that feat on Saturday when the three-meter dive will be held.
After the second day of competition, Syracuse remains in the same spots as it did after the first. The men’s team is in eighth place with 92 points and the women’s team is in ninth with 84. Freshman Alex Taraskin earned All-BIG EAST honors with a third place finish in the 500 free (4:25.76). It is the second-consecutive year that an Orange swimmer earned all conference honors in that event after Rob Persico came in third last year. Senior Luk Boral came in 13th place in the 200 IM (1:52.17).
The Orange also competed in two relays on Thursday. The women’s 200 free relay team came in eighth place (1:36.24) and the men’s 200 free relay team came in 11th (1:26.86).
The BIG EAST Championship continues on Friday and Saturday.
