Syracuse is 5-4 all-time in season openers, winning its last five opening games. The Orange has begun its season facing a top 10 opponent on six occasions, recording two victories in those contests. The Orange defeated Harvard, 15-9, in last season’s opener at the Carrier Dome. SU’s meeting at Dartmouth is the sixth time that the Orange will open the year on the road. Syracuse owns a 2-3 record in its previous five contests.
Lethal One-Two Punch
Senior Gaddy Fortune and sophomore Katie Rowan combined for more goals than any other Syracuse duo in school history last season. The teammates combined to score 93 goals in 2006, one more than Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Monica Joines scored during the 2004 season.
Fortune tallied 47 goals during her junior season, the second-highest total in school history. She scored at least one goal in every game last year, becoming the second player in the program’s history to accomplish the feat (Leigh-Ann Zimmer; 2002 and 2004). Fortune also recorded 50 points in 2006, which ranks 10th in Syracuse history. She currently ranks 10th in school history with 57 career goals.
Rowan had a remarkable freshman campaign in 2006. She posted 46 goals, the third-highest total in school history. Rowan also led the Orange with 56 points, which is tied for fourth in the SU record books. Both of those marks are also Syracuse freshman records.
Syracuse – Dartmouth Series
The meeting between Syracuse and Dartmouth is the ninth time the two schools will face each other. The 2007 meeting will be the eight consecutive year the two teams have faced off against each other. Dartmouth holds the advantage in the series, 5-3. Both teams have been ranked in the top 20 of the coaches poll all eight of the meetings. The home team is 7-1 in the series.
Last season, the Orange upset third-ranked Dartmouth in an overtime thriller at the Carrier Dome. Caitlyn Dragon scored the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime to help lead Syracuse to the victory. Dartmouth had won the previous four contests before last season’s contest. The Big Green last defeated Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament First Round in 2005, edging the Orange by a score of 9-8.
Scouting the Big Green
Dartmouth returns six starters from a team that went 14-6 and advanced to the NCAA Championship Game during the 2006 season. The Big Green defeated Boston University (9-4), Princeton (7-6) and Notre Dame (14-8) before losing to Northwestern (7-4) in the national title game.
The Big Green will be led by senior Whitney Douthett. Douthett was named the team’s offensive MVP as a junior in 2006, was named to the IWLCA All-American Second Team and was a unanimous selection to the All-Ivy Team. She finished the year first on the team with 67 points, posting 33 goals and a team-best 34 assists. Junior Kristen Barry is another key returner for the Big Green. She finished first on the team in 2005 by posting 40 goals. Barry was named a regional All-American First Team selection during her sophomore season. Douthett was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-American First Team while Barry earned third-team accolades.
Dartmouth lost a number of key players from its 2006 team that advanced to the championship game. Lizzy Cuneo earned first-team honors to the All-America team and All-Ivy Team and was named the IWLCA Defensive Player of the Year. Another loss is All-American goalkeeper Devon Wills. Wills earned second-team accolades to the All-American team in 2006 and was named to the All-Ivy Second Team.
