SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Rich Asante, freshman Hansen Woodruff and junior Brad Peetoom were each honored at the SU men’s soccer team’s end-of-the-year banquet on Saturday, Feb. 24. Asante was the recipient of the Frank Schantz Award, while Woodruff was selected as the team’s Offensive MVP and Peetoom was chosen as the squad’s Defensive MVP for the third straight year.
The Schantz Award, given to the individual that demonstrates commitment to the Syracuse program through on-field performance, character and excellence, is one of the most prestigious awards presented by the men’s soccer program. Asante, a 2006 team captain, scored two goals and had one assist from his midfield spot last season. He earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention laurels, was named to the NSCAA All-Region Second Team, and was selected with the 27th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft by the Toronto FC. He finished his career with 14 points (5g, 4a) in 63 matches.
Woodruff led SU in points (16), goals (7) and game-winning goals (4). His 16 points were the most for an Orange freshman since 2001 and his seven scores ranked seventh in the BIG EAST. Woodruff was picked as the conference’s Rookie of the Week on Oct. 9 after his golden goal lifted SU to a victory at Villanova.
Peetoom, also a team captain, was again the anchor of the SU defense. He helped the team to four shutouts before missing the final three matches of the season with an injury. Peetoom was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Aug. 28 for his performance in SU’s season-opening win against Niagara. He routinely marked the opposing team’s top player and worked with the Orange’s goalkeepers to position the defense. He has started all 49 games he has played in the last three seasons.
