OAK BROOK, Ill. – Syracuse University women’s basketball signee and Murry Bergtraum H.S. senior Erica Morrow has been selected to participate in the 2007 McDonald’s All American game to be played on March 28, 2007 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. EST.
This year, 48 players, 24 men and 24 women, were selected from 2,500 nominees by a committee of basketball experts. They were chosen not only for their on-court skills, but for their performances off the court as well. Coach Morgan Wootten, who had more than 1,200 wins as head basketball coach at DeMatha High, is chairman of the selection committee. Legendary UCLA coach John Wooden, who has been involved in the McDonald’s All American Games since its inception, serves as chairman of the Games and as an advisor to the selection committee.
"Being selected for the McDonald's All American Games is one of the greatest accomplishments in a basketball player's career," said head women’s basketball coach Quentin Hillsman. "I am honored to have a player be part of this tremendous game.”
Morrow and the rest of the Murry Bergtraum H.S. Lady Blazers won their first game as the No. 1 seed in this season’s A Division “AA” Public Schools Athletic League playoffs in New York City. Morrow, who is averaging 21.1 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds, has led the Lady Blazers to a 22-0 regular-season mark this year.
Morrow was also selected to participate in the 16th annual Women’s Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game earlier this month.
Fellow signee, Juanita Ward was a 2005 McDonald’s All-American out of high school, giving Syracuse two McDonald’s All Americans on its roster next season. Ward is currently averaging 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds for the undefeated Odessa Community College Wranglers. She will be a junior at Syracuse next fall.
Since 1977, more than 800 players have competed in the McDonald’s All American Games, forming an elite list that reads like a "Who’s Who" in basketball history. McDonald’s All American® athletes include NBA greats Michael Jordan (retired), Magic Johnson (retired), Kevin Garnett (Minnesota Timberwolves), LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets), as well as WNBA star Shanna Zolman (San Antonio Silver Stars) and Women’s NCAA stars Ann Strother (UConn), Candace Parker (Tennessee) and Seimone Augustus (LSU).
Tickets to the Games and POWERade® Jam Fest are available through Ticketmaster and by phone, (866) 909-GAME. POWERade Jam Fest will be held at Knight’s Hall at Bellarmine University March 26, 2007 beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST.
