Washington, D.C. – Georgetown capitalized on a late Syracuse turnover to lift the 10th-ranked Hoyas past the 12th-ranked Orange in a tight overtime contest. Georgetown scored an open-cage goal 1:07 into sudden-death overtime as the Hoyas won, 9-8.
Georgetown won the opening draw in the second overtime but senior Chelsea Strodel (Skaneateles, N.Y.) did an outstanding job forcing a turnover and giving the ball back to the Orange. However, when the Orange attempted to pass back to goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill (Lewiston, N.Y.), the ball rolled past the endline, giving the Hoyas the ball without Pardee-Hill in the cage. Georgetown was able to capitalize on the play, as Brittany Baschuk netted the game-winning goal.
Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) led the Orange with four points on three goals and one assist. Classmate Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) scored two goals for SU, while seniors Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) and sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) each tallied one goal. Rowan and sophomore Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) both added one assist.
Pardee-Hill stopped eight Georgetown shots, including a crucial save that sent the game into overtime.
The Orange (2-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) started the contest strong, quickly jumping to an early 2-0 advantage. Pike notched SU’s first goal of the afternoon 2:47 into the contest and DePetris gave Syracuse a two-goal advantage 38 seconds later. After the teams traded free-position goals, the Hoyas scored three-consecutive times to grab a 4-3 advantage. Georgetown’s lead was short-lived as Dove quickly squared up the game at four 25 seconds later. Neither team scored in the final 11 minutes of the half as the two schools headed into intermission knotted at four.
The Hoyas (2-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened the second half with two goals to grab a 6-4 advantage. Quillinan brought the Orange within one at the 18:45 mark and Rowan tied the game 24 seconds later. Georgetown responded with two goals of its own to hold an 8-6 advantage with 13:15 remaining.
Quillinan brought the Orange back, scoring SU’s last two goals of the game to tie the contest with 2:18 remaining. Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation. Georgetown won the draw but junior Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) forced a turnover. Hoyas’ goalkeeper Maggie Koch stopped Mosenson’s shot with 26 seconds remaining and Georgetown quickly transitioned in its attempt for victory. Pardee-Hill made an outstanding save off Coco Stanwick’s shot with five seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime.
The Hoyas won both draw controls in the overtime period and controlled much of the six minutes of play. However, the Orange played outstanding defense and allowed the Hoyas only two shots and zero shots on goal. The Orange could not overcome its late turnover in sudden-death overtime as Georgetown won the closely-contested game.
Syracuse held the advantage in shots (35-23), ground balls (22-11) and draw controls (14-7).
The Orange looks to get back to its winning ways, squaring off against Towson on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
