COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Amy Kelley led the SU with a school-record tying five RBI and the Syracuse University (2-13) softball team scored five runs in the first inning but relinquished 12 to the University of Illinois in a 12-7 setback in the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational on Sun., March 4 in College Station, Texas.
Kelley doubled to left field in the first, bringing home sophomore Lindsay Wasek, senior Erin Gray and junior Rachel Tilford. Her single in the seventh also scored Gray and Tilford. Wasek and sophomore Heather Kim recorded the other two RBI for the Orange.
Tilford added two doubles and went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Gray also went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and a sacrifice hit.
Syracuse also put runners in scoring position in the third, fifth and sixth innings but failed to score.
Freshman Brittany Gardner pitched 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out two. Junior Chanel Roehner allowed four runs, three earned in 1.1 innings and sophomore Keri Casas pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run, while striking out one.
Vicky Brown earned the win for Illinois, pitching 6.1 innings. Brown came in after Ashley Wright allowed five SU runs, four earned in 0.2 innings worth of work.
The Orange returns to action next weekend, competing at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
