
Catrina Roth is the first Syracuse swimmer to win an Arthur Ashe Award

Syracuse, N.Y..- Syracuse University had 11 student-athletes honored as recipients of the 14th Annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Gloria Nantulya of the field hockey team, Edvin Hot and Luis Martinez of the men’s soccer team, Catrina Roth of the women’s swimming team, Kayla Carter, Emily Goncalves, Candace Ince, Ashwin Kumar, Nana Sang-Bender, and Keisha Townsend of the men and women’s track and field team, and Cheryl Cobbina of the volleyball team were all selected for their athletic and academic achievements.
Nantulya was selected to the field hockey first team. Roth was a second team women’s swimming selection. Carter, Ince, and Kumar were all second team track and field selections, while Goncalves and Townsend were on the third team and Sang-Bender the fourth team. Hot and Martinez were both on the men’s soccer third team; and Cobbina was third team in volleyball.
The Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards are given to student-athletes of color who have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale through the Fall 2006 semester. The student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution, must be an active member of an intercollegiate team during the 2006-07 academic year, and must have a demonstrated record of service to the campus or community.
Nantulya, a junior majoring in public relations, has been named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad in each of her three seasons at Syracuse. She is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a five-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. She started all 19 games in 2006, helping the SU defense to a 1.92 goals allowed average.
Hot, a junior with a double major in psychology and political science, is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a four-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Hot appeared in 14 games in 2006, helping the SU defense to five shutouts.
Martinez, a freshman enrolled in the College of Human Services and Health Professions, was named to the Fall 2006 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, his first at the school. He was second on the team with three assists.
Roth, a sophomore public relations major, was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star as a freshman and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll three times. She compiled seven first place finishes in backstroke events this past year and competed in three events at the 2007 BIG EAST Championship.
Goncalves, a sophomore enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice.
Ince, a senior with a double major in psychology and communication sciences and disorders, was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star as a freshman and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll six times. She was a member of the 4x800m relay team that placed fourth at the 2007 BIG EAST Indoor Championship with a school record time of 9:02.61.
Kumar, a sophomore pre-med major, is a two-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Sang-Bender, a sophomore international relations major, was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star as a freshman and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll three times. She earned All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Region accolades in cross country in 2006. She owns the school record in the mile run with a time of 4:50.98.
Townsend, a junior majoring in marketing management, was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star as a sophomore and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll five times. Townsend has recorded top 10 finishes in the 100m and 400m hurdles at the 2006 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
Cobbina, a junior with a double major in english and textual studies and english education, is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a five-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. She tied a school record with 34 kills at Temple this past season.
