Homeruns made the difference in the first game, as the Cardinals hit two blasts for three RBI. The Orange had tied the second game in the bottom of the second, but was unable to pull it out, as Gardner gave up four runs in the top of the seventh.
In the top of the first of game one, junior RHP Chanel Roehner gave up one run on a double to Brooke McCrain that allowed Melissa Roth to score from first, where she landed after hitting a single down the right field line.
After striking out Kristen Wadwell in the top of the second, Roehner gave up a homerun to Becca Saksefiski who blasted one to left field that just wrapped around the foul pole.
Roehner had a tough fourth inning, giving up a single to Kristi Cunningham, followed by Saksefiski who hit an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw. Roehner then walked Sarah Totten, before Candi Hicks hit a two RBI double. Roehner managed to get out of the inning, leaving the score at 5-0 at the end of the top of the fourth.
The Orange finally was able to bring a runner home on two outs, when senior Erin Gray walked, and sophomore Amy Kelley got a single, which advanced Gray to third, followed by a single by sophomore Lindsay Wasek on which Gray scored. Sophomore Nicole Miller kept the inning alive as she also had an RBI single down the right field line, which scored Wasek. Freshman Ev Anderson ended the inning with a ground out to third, but the inning allowed the Orange to get on the board and decrease the Cardinals’ lead to three.
After giving up a two-run homer to Cunningham in the top of the fifth, Roehner was replaced by sophomore LHP Keri Casas who shut down the Cardinals to end the inning.
Casas had a solid inning of relief as she only gave up a single to Audrey Rendon in the top half of the sixth.
Casas retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh, showing a solid relief appearance. Miller had a single in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough for the Orange to start a rally, as the game ended in a loss for the Orange, 7-2.
Roehner got the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Kristen Wadwell picked up the victory for UofL, allowing two runs on seven hits in four innings of action. Catherine Bishop was credited with the save, throwing three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit.
The first runs of game two came in the top of the fourth by Louisville, as Sarah Totten hit a single up the center with two outs that allowed Melissa Roth and Kristi Cunningham to score. Cunningham had reached base on a double to left center and Cunningham had a single and a stolen base, to have runners at second and third before Totten’s hit scored them. Gardner got out of the inning, but not before the Cardinals had put two on the board.
The Orange had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, in part to an error by the second baseman, but the Orange stranded the bases loaded as Wasek struck out and Miller fouled out to the first baseman to end the Orange’s rally attempt.
Looking to help its pitcher out, the Orange finally got on the board as sophomore Amy Kelley hit a fielder’s choice RBI, which scored junior Rachel Tilford from third, who had walked to start the inning. The Orange tied the game with a sacrifice fly out to left field by Gray, which scored Roehner from third. The Orange and Cardinals were tied at the end of six.
Gardner found herself in a bit of trouble as she loaded the bases, and gave a hit up the middle to Roth. Immediately following the single, Courtney Moore hit a double that cleared the bases, leaving Moore on second with three RBI.
SU managed nothing in the seven and lost game two, 6-2.
Gardner pitched all seven innings in the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts.
Wadwell pitched the final three innings and was credited with the win, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
The Orange has another BIG EAST doubleheader on Sunday, April 15 beginning at 11 a.m. against the South Florida Bulls at Skytop Stadium.
