SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and junior Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) each had record-setting performances for the Orange last week and for their efforts, the duo has earned BIG EAST Conference honors. Rowan is the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Looney was a BIG EAST Honor Roll selection.
Rowan tied the SU record by posting 10 points and seven goals against No. 18 Rutgers. Rowan’s 10 points matched the mark set by Kim Wayne (three goals and seven assists) against Connecticut during the 2002 season and her seven goals tied the record set by Katrina Hable and Lauren Brady.
In addition, Rowan became the ninth player in school history to record 100 career points. She reached the 100-point plateau in just 28 games, tying Hable as the quickest players in school history to reach the mark. Rowan ranks ninth in school history with 107 career points, seventh with 82 career goals and eighth with 25 career assists.
Leader of the nation’s seventh-ranked offense, Rowan has posted a team-best 51 points and 36 goals. She is also second on the team with 15 assists. Rowan ranks third in the BIG EAST with 4.25 points per game, third with 3.00 goals per game and fifth with 1.25 assists per game.
Looney is a big contributor to the Orange defensive unit. In Syracuse’s 100th all-time victory against Colgate, Looney set a school record by posting eight caused turnovers. She topped the previous mark of six set by Carrie Soults (at New Hampshire, 1999) and Jessica Trombley (at Stanford, 2002). Looney was then part of a defensive unit that had one of its best halves of the season against No. 18 Rutgers. Syracuse forced more turnovers (13) then the Scarlet Knights had shots (11) as SU jumped to a 14-3 halftime advantage.
Looney leads the Orange with 32 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers during the season. Her 23 forced miscues is six shy of the program’s record, set by Carrie Bolduc in 1999. Looney currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in both ground balls per game (2.91) and caused turnovers (2.09).
Syracuse is back in action on Wednesday, hosting in-state rival Cornell. First draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
