Rowan Rolls in the Goals
Sophomore Katie Rowan is making quite an impact on the SU record book. In Syracuse’s last game against No. 18 Rutgers, Rowan matched school records with 10 points and seven goals. Her performance against the nationally-ranked Scarlet Knights earned Rowan BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week accolades.
Rowan leads the Orange in 2007 with 51 points (36 goals and 15 assists), the eighth-highest total in school history. Last season, Rowan set the freshman records with 46 goals and 56 points. In addition, her 46 goals rank third in the program’s record book while her 56 points are tied for the fourth-most in SU history.
Disruptive Presence
Junior Bridget Looney is forcing opposing players to turn the ball over at an alarming rate. Against Colgate, Looney set an SU record by forcing eight opponent miscues. Carrie Soults (at New Hampshire, 1999) and Jessica Trombley (at Stanford, 2002) shared the previous record of six. For her effort against the Raiders, Looney was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Looney is also approaching the single-season record of 29 caused turnovers. She has recorded 23 caused turnovers this season, six shy of the mark set by Carrie Bolduc in 1999. Looney currently ranks second in the BIG EAST and 14th nationally with 2.09 caused turnovers per game.
Domeination
Many teams enter the Carrier Dome but very few can claim to leave the Loud House as a winner. Syracuse owns an all-time record of 59-16 (.787 winning percentage) at the Carrier Dome. This season, SU is 4-1 in home games, including two wins against ranked teams.
New York State of Mind
The Orange has dominated play against schools from New York State since its arrival on the women’s lacrosse scene. Syracuse is 3-0 against in-state competition in 2007, defeating Albany, 19-6, Binghamton, 23-4 and Colgate, 16-8. The Orange owns a 24-5 all-time record against in-state schools (.828 winning percentage) with all five losses coming to Cornell. Syracuse has never lost to a school from New York at the Carrier Dome, winning all 17 games.
Syracuse – Cornell Series
Syracuse has faced Cornell more than any other opponent during the program’s history. The two teams have each won five games during the nine-year series. The Big Red defeated the Orange, 16-8, during a 2002 NCAA First Round matchup. Syracuse has won all four games against Cornell in the Carrier Dome.
Last year, the 11th-ranked Big Red shut down SU’s high-powered offense en route to a 9-4 victory. Gaddy Fortune led the Orange with two goals while Jill DePetris and Kristin Brady each scored once. Last year’s meeting is the only game that Katie Rowan has failed to score a goal or register a point.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell defeated Brown, 19-10, on Friday to end its four-game losing streak. The Big Red, who was ranked No. 11 in the preseason poll, enters the Carrier Dome with a record of 3-7. Junior Noelle Dowd led Cornell with five goals against Brown and three other players registered hat tricks.
Junior Courtney Farrell has paced the Big Red in 2007, leading the team with 44 points on 18 goals and a team-best 26 assists. Dowd leads Cornell with 18 goals on the season while junior Katherine Simmons has chipped in 18 goals.
Renee Hughes and Mary Montague have split time in the cage this season. Hughes is 2-6 this season and owns a goals against average of 12.48 and a save percentage of .390. Montague is 1-1 and has posted a goals against average of 12.42 and a save percentage of .382.
