SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Members of the Syracuse University men’s soccer team hosted a group of Syracuse Parks and Recreation students at Manley Field House on April 17 as part of its “Supporting Youth Through Soccer” program. Hansen Woodruff, Spencer Schomaker, Kyle Hall, Robert Cavicchia, Daniel Sherry, and Andrew Usyk spent time teaching the kids various soccer skills and then adjourned for pizza and a life stills/personal development session.
“It’s important to present the next generation with the possibilities that exist through sports,” SU assistant coach Jaro Zawislan said. “The players become role models for kids. They are examples that if you work hard in the classroom, and in this case on the soccer field, that you can achieve your dreams. And it’s good to hear those stories from the players themselves.”
The Orange players showed the kids basic soccer skills like dribbling, shooting, and juggling through a variety of different games and drills. Afterwards, the players addressed the kids about ways to use athletics for personal growth, including the development of characteristics like respect and tolerance, as well as the importance of time management. They also described their experiences as student-athletes and the importance of taking the time to give back to the community.
“What I got most out of it was their smiles and laughter,” Hall said of the program. “It was nice to see them enjoying themselves and it makes me feel good that I can share the blessings I’ve been given with others.”
