The Syracuse University softball team split its doubleheader with St. John’s, taking game one 3-2 (8), before losing game two 12-11 (10). Syracuse is now 16-27 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST Conference. Junior Chanel Roehner ended the day with a .714 batting average, going 5-for-7 with three RBI, three runs scored and two doubles. She also recorded her second save of the season in game one.
Syracuse and St. John’s took a scoreless game one into the eighth inning. Starting pitchers freshman Brittany Gardner and Lisa Geer battled it out in the circle as neither pitcher allowed a run to score until the eighth. The Orange loaded the bases twice during the game, but Geer kept her cool, working out of trouble in the third and the fifth frames.
Syracuse scored three runs off three hits and an error in the eighth. Sophomore Heather Kim led off the inning and singled to right field. Junior Rachel Tilford singled to third base advancing Kim to second. Roehner doubled and advanced to third on the throw, recording two RBI, scoring Kim and Tilford. Roehner scored on a fielding error by the Red Storm shortstop, giving SU the 3-0 advantage.
St. John’s responded with two runs off four hits in the bottom of the eighth, but could not come all the way back, leaving two runners on base. Tami Hill doubled to right field and stole third to open the inning. Roxann Struble tripled to right field, scoring Hill. Danielle Estrada singled to left center, scoring Struble. And with two outs and two runners on Roehner came into pitch, getting the last out to register her second save of the year.
Syracuse kept its momentum in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the third. The Orange led 11-0 after Tilford’s three-run homer capped another four-run frame for Syracuse.
Sophomore Tonye McCorkle walked to begin the game. Kim singled to right center, advancing McCorkle to third. SU executed the double steal with Kim taking second and McCorkle home. Roehner singled to center field and advanced on the throw, scoring Kim. Senior Erin Gray walked and sophomore Amy Kelly singled to right center, scoring Roehner and Gray.
Tilford singled to the pitcher to get the third-inning rally started. Roehner singled to left field, advancing Tilford to third. Gray singled down the leftfield line, scoring Tilford and advancing Roehner to second. Kelley singled to center field, scoring Roehner and advancing Gray to second. Gray advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a throwing error to give SU the 7-0 advantage.
The Orange added four more runs in the sixth. Sophomore Lindsay Wasek doubled to right field and advanced to third on a single by freshman Ev Anderson. Sophomore Jorden Rosen singled, scoring Wasek and advancing Anderson to second. Kim reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Anderson to third just before Tilford hit the three-run blast to put the margin at 11-0.
With game two on the line in the sixth inning, the Red Storm started the rally to climb back into the game. Rookie Reyes was walked to start the side and Danielle Estrada doubled down the right field line to put runners in scoring position. Spring Montgomery plated Brandy Reyes to put St. John’s first run on the board. Bionka King and Hill singled to keep the game alive and set the table for Loren Anguiano. The Red Storm had two outs recorded in the inning when Anguiano stepped to the plate, but the senior third baseman would not be denied, belting a walk-off grand slam to make it an 11-6 game.
The bottom of the seventh inning once again started with Reyes who fired a double to center field. Montgomery was walked, King singled and when Ona Halladay was walked, Reyes was forced across the plate to score another run for the Red Storm. Back-to-back two-RBI singles from Hill and Anguiano tied the game.
Once again, the two teams took the game into extra innings.
Reyes, leading off the bottom of the tenth inning, rocketed a solo home run over the left field fence and helped her team secure a 12-11 victory.
Syracuse is next in action Sunday at Seton Hall at noon.
