
Orange Women’s Basketball Hands Out 2006-07 Awards

The Syracuse University women’s basketball team gave out its annual team awards at its banquet over the weekend. Freshman sensation Nicole Michael was honored as SU’s Most Outstanding Player. Sophomore Cintia Johnson earned recognition as the Orange’s Most Improved Player and junior Vaida Sipaviciute was given the Coaches Award. Seniors Ashley McMillen and Tracy Harbut were also honored for their contributions to the Orange program.
Michael, who earned BIG EAST All-Rookie and honorable mention honors, Michael became the first player in school history to eclipse the 500-point plateau, setting the Syracuse single-season record with 501 points. Michael’s average of 17.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game ranked first on the team and sixth and seventh in the conference, respectively.
Johnson was one of three players to start all 29 games and led the Orange with 113 assists and 42 steals. The sophomore ranked ninth in the BIG EAST with 3.90 assists per game and also ranked third during conference play with 4.69 assists per game. She contributed 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Sipaviciute was also one of one of three players to start all 29 games. She finished second on the team with 13.2 points per game and third with 5.8 rebounds per game. The junior led the Orange with a 46.8 shooting percentage, 72.3 free-throw percentage and 57 blocks, the 10th-highest total in school history and the most ever by an SU junior.
