Camden, N.J. – The Syracuse women’s rowing program reached uncharted territory at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, placing sixth of 18 teams at the regional meet. Syracuse’s sixth-place finish marks the best result in the program’s history.
The Orange’s previous best finish in school history was ninth on numerous occasions, including last season. Syracuse also had a school-record three boats qualify for the grand final.
“We had three out of five crews make the final which we never have had happen,” said SU head coach Kris Sanford. “We finished sixth overall and our highest finish before was ninth.”
The Orange, which finished tied for second at the BIG EAST Championship, had three boats record top-five finishes. The novice four crew placed second overall with a time of 8:10.124, the BIG EAST Champion novice eight boat finished fourth with a time of 7:13.771 and the varsity four crew placed fifth in 8:03.017.
“Our goal for the last two years has been to build team depth,” Sanford said. “To judge our success is to see success in our lower boats first and that was has happened. We had a second-place finish, a fourth-place finish and a fifth-place finish.”
“The majority of our team is freshmen and sophomores and that show a lot for the future of our program,” Sanford continued. “It shows we are going in the right direction and this speed will show in the higher boats next season.”
In addition to the three crews that qualified for the grand final, the SU varsity eight and second varsity eight competed in the petite final. The varsity eight placed fifth in the petite final with a time of 7:04.436, while the second varsity eight finished third with a mark of 7:10.049.
