SENIOR DAY
The Orange will honor its six seniors before the game on Sunday. The team will show its appreciation for Shari Appollon, Jill DePetris, Gaddy Fortune, Melissa Pearsall, Ashley Pike and Chelsea Strodel for their hard work and dedication during their four seasons at SU.
BIG EAST CHAMPIONS
The Orange won the inaugural BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship with a 12-7 victory against top-seeded Georgetown on Sunday, April 27. Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill recorded 13 saves in the contest, earning the championship’s Most Outstanding Player award. With the victory, Syracuse earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The BIG EAST title was not only the first for the Orange and ended Georgetown’s six-year reign as the conference’s champions, but it was also SU’s first-ever victory against the Hoyas in 11 attempts.
ROWAN REACHING UNCHARTED TERRITORY
Sophomore Katie Rowan is rewriting the Syracuse record books in just her second season at SU. She has totaled 73 points in 2007 and 50 goals, both numbers rank second in school history and are just shy of the program’s records, set by Leigh-Ann Zimmer in 2004. Zimmer totaled 74 points three years ago on 52 goals and 22 assists. Rowan has at least two games remaining on the schedule to record one point and two goals to break the program’s record.
Rowan is not shy to setting school records. During her first season on The Hill, Rowan totaled 46 goals and 56 points, setting freshman records. In addition, she matched school records with a seven-goal and 10-point performance against Rutgers earlier in the season.
Rowan has scored at least one goal in each game this season. Only two other players have accomplished that feat at Syracuse. Zimmer scored at least once during both the 2002 and 2004 seasons and Gaddy Fortune accomplished the feat in 2006.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The SU defense has stepped up big lately and it led the Orange to its first-ever conference championship. The Orange allowed only 14 goals in its two games during the BIG EAST Tournament and was led by sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill, who was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player. She recorded 24 saves during the weekend for a save percentage of .632. Against the Hoyas in the championship game, Pardee-Hill recorded 13 saves, including nine in the first half to lead SU to a five-goal intermission advantage. In addition to being named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player, Pardee-Hill also picked up WomensLax.com Player of the Week honors.
Pardee-Hill’s game has improved a great amout during the second-half of the season. During the last six games, she is averaging 11.83 saves per game and owns a goal against average of 8.17 and a save percentage of .592.
With her improved play, Pardee-Hill leads the BIG EAST in goal against average (9.25), save percentage (.515) and saves per game (9.94). She also ranks 12th in the country in goal against average and 13th in save percentage.
MILLER NAMED US LACROSSE COACH OF THE WEEK
Syracuse head coach Lisa Miller was recognized as the US Lacrosse Coach of the Week after guiding the Orange to its first-ever BIG EAST Championship. Miller led SU to two victories against nationally-ranked teams to win the inaugural BIG EAST Tournament. The Orange also ended Georgetown’s six-year reign as champion and defeated the perennial power Hoyas for the first time in 11 tries.
SYRACUSE – PENN SERIES
The Orange and the Quakers are meeting for just the second time on the women’s lacrosse field. 20th-ranked Penn defeated No. 18 Syracuse, 9-8 in the Carrier Dome last season. Penn scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-winner with 2:37 remaining. Katie Rowan led Syracuse with three goals and Kristin Brady chipped in two.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
The Quakers have won their last 10 games but hasn’t played since defeating Brown, 12-4, on April 21. Penn held the Bears scoreless for nearly the first 40 minutes of the game, cruising to the eight-goal victory. Penn’s last defeat came on March 9, losing to No. 1 Northwestern, 13-4. During SU’s string of 11 games, the Orange’s only loss was also to the Wildcats, falling to Northwestern, 10-7.
The Penn offensive unit is led by Rachel Manson and Chrissy Muller, who have both posted 38 points this season. Manson leads the Quakers with 31 goals and has added seven assists, while Muller paces the Quakers with a team-best 20 assists to go along with 18 goals. Penn also has a balanced attack with three other players recording at least 25 points, including Ali DeLuca (29g, 7a), Becca Edwards (26g, 4a) and Melissa Lehman (21g, 5a).
The Penn defense ranks as one of the best units in the country, owning the second-best scoring defense at 6.21 goals per game. Goalkeeper Sarah Waxman ranks second in the country with a 6.03 goals against average and fifth with a .547 save percentage.
