The Orange (12-5), who won the BIG EAST Championship and the conference’s automatic bid, now awaits its NCAA First Round opponent. The 16-team bracket is scheduled to be release Monday at 8 p.m. A selection show will be featured on NCAAsports.com and also JPZ 89.1, who will also air its own selection show from 8 to 9 p.m. (click here). All first round games will be played on May 13.
Rowan’s five points and three goals broke the single-season school records set by Leigh-Ann Zimmer in 2004. Rowan raised her season total to 78 points and 53 goals to surpass Zimmer’s totals of 74 points and 52 goals. The second-year player also raised her career-goal total to 99, one shy of becoming the sixth player in school history to reach the 100-goal plateau.
Freshman Halley Quillinan registered two goals and juniors Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Bridget Looney (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) each added a goal. Senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) posted two assists, while Dove and sophomore Bridget Hamm (Penn Yan, N.Y.) chipped in an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Pardee-Hill (Lewiston, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots in cage but because of Penn’s draw control dominance, Pardee-Hill faced 30 shots compared to just the 19 shots that SU fired on Penn’s cage. Penn goalkeeper Sarah Waxman made five saves.
Penn (14-1) opened the scoring 4:05 into the contest but the Orange quickly responded and took control of the first half. Looney scored her first goal of the afternoon 2:26 later, triggering a 5-0 Syracuse run. Quillinan tallied two goals and Dove and Brady each registered a goal to give the Orange a 5-1 advantage. Rowan recorded her second assist of the game on Quillinan’s goal with 15:30 remaining to break the point’s record. Penn scored its second goal and the half’s final goal with 8:49 remaining as the two schools headed into intermission with the Orange holding a 5-2 advantage.
Rowan scored two goals in the opening 3:37 of the second stanza to give SU a five-goal advantage, 7-2. After Penn tallied two goals, Rowan scored her 53rd goal of the season with 15:32 remaining to set a new standard at SU for single-season goals. Unfortunately for the Orange, that was the last goal that SU would score. Penn rallied off the next six goals to earn its school-record 14th win of the season.
