STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Former Orange lacrosse players Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Steve Panarelli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) were each selected in the 2007 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft on Thursday, May 31. Rommel was chosen in the first round (seventh overall) by Rochester and Panarelli was taken in the third round (24th overall) by Chicago. The seventh annual draft was held on the campus of Stony Brook University in conjunction with the Warrior Major League Challenge, a showcase game featuring 40 college seniors playing under MLL rules. Both events were televised on ESPNU.
Rommel will join former Syracuse standouts Casey Powell, Scott Ditzell, Jake Plunket, and Solomon Bliss as members of the Rattlers, while Panarelli will team up with current SU Director of Lacrosse Operations Lelan Rogers in Chicago. Rogers is in his first season as head coach of the Machine.
Rommel started all 13 games in the midfield for the Orange in 2007. He tallied 15 goals and six assists for 21 points and paced SU with four man-up goals. He completed his career with 63 goals and 74 points in 61 games from 2003-07. He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I First Team three times and was a second-team All-American in 2005.
He will join a Rochester squad that is 0-1 after a season-opening loss to Washington. The Rattlers have 11 regular-season games left beginning with a June 2 contest at Philadelphia.
Panarelli finished his senior campaign with 39 ground balls, playing both close defense and long-stick midfield. He also contributed a goal and an assist. Panarelli capped his final season by competing in the prestigious North-South Senior Classic last week in Baltimore, Md. For his career, Panarelli, a three-time All-American, totaled 186 ground balls in 58 games. He also tallied eight goals and three assists for 11 career points.
The Machine is also off to an 0-1 start and resumes its regular season on June 2 against Denver.
Rogers and Chicago chose Penn State’s Pat Heim with the No. 1 overall selection. The Machine also nabbed Bill Looney of Navy (fifth overall), Delaware’s Jordan Hall (11th overall) Steve Whittenberg of Maryland (15th overall), Dan Kallaugher of Loyola (20th overall), Dan Deckelbaum from Delaware (28th overall), and Maryland’s Harry Alford (45th overall).
The Machine’s eight draft choices were more than any other team.
