SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Orange men’s soccer star Patrice Bernier and Team Canada were eliminated from the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Thursday, June 21. The Canadians lost to Team USA, 2-1, in the semifinals at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Bernier started the match in the midfield for Canada, his fourth starting nod in the tournament.
The U.S. got a goal from Frankie Hejduk to take a 1-0 lead, and Landon Donovan extended the margin to 2-0 when he converted a penalty kick in the 46th minute. Iain Hume tallied Canada’s only goal of the game in the 76th minute, although it appeared to tie the match in the final minute, but the potential equalizer was wiped away by an offsides call.
Team USA will play Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday, June 24.
At Syracuse, Bernier was a member of the NSCAA All-Region First Team in 1999 and was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team choice in 1998. He scored 16 points in 1998 and tallied 18 points in 1999 for a total of 34 career points. Bernier started all 38 games of his career and he ranks seventh all-time in points per game at 0.89.
