Six Syracuse 2007 National Letter of Intent signees will color the field orange as they put their talents on display at the annual New York/New Jersey All-Star Classic on Sunday, June 10 at Rutgers Stadium. Syracuse’s six representatives is the second-most for any school. The annual game features prospects from New York and New Jersey. The 2007 Orange will kickoff its season on August 31 vs. Washington at the Carrier Dome. Click here for tickets.
The Orange will be represented by wide receiver/defensive back Chaz Cervino, defensive lineman Oliver Haney, wide receiver/cornerback Da’Mon Merkerson and defensive end/tight end Lamar Middleton from the state of New Jersey, as well as running back Doug Hogue and quarterback David Legree from the Empire State.
Cervino was named to the 2007 All-State Second Team and earned first-team All-Non-Public and All-Passaic honors. As a senior, Cervino passed for 1,270 yards and 15 touchdowns, rushed for 1,003 yards and 13 touchdowns and recorded 73 tackles for Coach John McKenna at DePaul Catholic High School.
Ranked the 21st-best prospect in New Jersey by SuperPrep, Haney was also named to the 2006 Northeast Regional Team. He earned all-state accolades and was named to the All-Group 2 and All-Union First Team playing for Coach Albert Fracassa at Johnson Regional High School. As a senior, Haney posted 75 tackles, 10.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles.
Merkerson earned Northeast Regional Team accolades and was ranked the 30th-best prospect in New Jersey by SuperPrep after leading St. Mary’s High School to its first Non-Public Group 1 State Championship. He was named to the MaxPreps All-Heisman Team in the tri-state area, the All-Bergen Defensive Team and the All-Non-Public First Team, as well as earning defensive player of the year honors in Parochial A-B, second-team all-state accolades and first-team all-area honors. Playing for Coach Mike Sheridan, Merkerson recorded 28 solo tackles, six interceptions, 614 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior.
The Shabazz High School defensive end and tight end, Middleton, earned 2006 all-county and all-conference accolades and was ranked the 23rd-best prospect in New Jersey by Scout.com. He had 20 receptions and two touchdowns and posted 60 tackles and eight sacks for Coach David McCombs.
Rivals.com and SuperPrep ranked Legree in the top six prospects in New York. Legree earned Northeast Regional Team accolades and was also named New York City Player of the Year after his junior season playing for Coach Thomas Salvato at South Shore Brooklyn High School. As a senior, he completed 64-of-130 passes for 1,115 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 458 yards and three touchdowns.
Hogue, a running back from Roosevelt Bronx High School, was rated the 31st-best running back and the 58th-best prospect in the east by Scout.com. Rivals.com, Scout.com and SuperPrep ranked Hogue in the top six players in New York and was named to the Scout.com All-East Team, earned Northeast Regional Team honors, and earned team all-state accolades playing for Coach Anthony Fiorelli.
Twenty-six football student-athletes signed to join the Orange for the 2007 season. Syracuse’s pre-season camp begins August 3.
