MADISON, WI – Cheryl Cobbina’s 73 attacks and Joscie Kaup’s match-best 40 digs set new single-match (five-games) records in Syracuse’s narrow 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the InnTowner Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
MADISON, WI – Cheryl Cobbina’s 73 attacks and Joscie Kaup’s match-best 40 digs set new single-match (five-games) records in Syracuse’s narrow 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the InnTowner Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Cobbina's 73 attacks are the program's most in a five-game match since Andrea Carson tallied 67 against Maryland in 1990. Kaup tops her own personal mark of 33 digs in a five-game match set against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh in 2006.
“Our senior leadership really showed strong on the court today,” said head coach Jing Pu. “The team gained critical experience from today’s game.”
Redshirt-junior April Quigley added to the Syracuse offensive charge with a match-high 59 assists, while sophomore Kacie MacTavish posted 14 kills and a career-best 27 digs. Junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Samantha Ainsworth each contributed 10 kills.
After trailing by as many as five points, the Orange rallied from behind to win game one, 33-31. Quigley’s 13 assists aided seven kills from Cobbina and five from Kern. Defensively, Kaup and MacTavish each added five digs.
Following back-to-back close losses in games two and three, the Orange evened the match at two games apiece in game four behind Quigley’s 16 assists, Kaup’s 13 digs and Cobbina’s eight kills. Syracuse led by as much as eight points before finishing the win 30-26.
In a back-and-forth decisive game five, Cobbina and MacTavish each posted two kills while Quigley tallied four assists and Kaup recorded nine digs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-1) edged the Orange in game five, 15-13.
Sophomore Sarah Morton collected seven kills and sophomore Shanetha McLaurin totaled 11 digs.
Syracuse (1-1) plays its third and final game at the InnTowner Invitational against No. 11 Wisconsin at 8:00 p.m. (ET) Saturday. For live stats of the match, click here.
