HANOVER, N.H. – The Ange Bradley era of Syracuse field hockey remained undefeated as graduate student Leigh Fawcett scored twice and the Orange overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Maine Black Bears, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday, September 1 in Dartmouth, N.H. The back tallied the Orange’s last two goals of the afternoon. Syracuse improved to 3-0 on the season, while Maine moved to 0-3.
“We came back from a three-goal deficit and that is really hard to do in this sport,” said head coach Ange Bradley. “I am really proud of our team. We got down early and struggled in the first half, but somehow we found a way.”
Senior forward Gloria Nantulya notched SU’s first goal of the day, her team-best tying third of the season, after taking a long pass from midfielder Maggie Befort and beating Black Bear goalkeeper Rebecca Giroux in the 37th minute.
Befort notched her third goal of the year off a penalty stroke at 52:59 to put the score at 3-2, Maine.
That is when Fawcett took over. The Scotland native converted a broken play off an Orange corner at the 61 minute mark to tie the score at 3-3. She then drove home a golden goal corner at 81:05 to give Syracuse the 4-3 victory. Befort provided the push and junior back Heather Doran made a superb stick stop on the game-winning goal.
SU last began a season 3-0 in 1997. The Orange won its first six games that season.
The Black Bear’s first goal came off a penalty corner that was deflected by Syracuse’s flyer. Amy Zdrojesky was credited with the goal.
Maine’s Nicole Emery put a nice shot from the 45 past junior goalkeeper Heather Hess for the Black Bear’s second goal.
Courtney Veinotte tipped a shot past freshman goalkeeper Christina Puggi, whom took over for Hess at halftime, for Maine’s third and last tally of the afternoon.
Puggi made two saves in 46:05 of action and was credited her second win of the season. Hess registered five saves in the first half. Giroux was credited with seven saves for Maine.
The Orange created 13 corners to only four for Maine. Syracuse also outshot the Black Bears, 23-13.
The Orange remains in Hanover, N.H., for a game tomorow at Dartmouth at 2 p.m.
