AKRON, OH – Senior defensive specialist Joscie Kaup became Syracuse’s all-time career digs leader after tallying a team-best 19 in a 3-1 loss against Akron at the Sheraton Hilton Invitational. Kaup’s record-breaking performance raises her career total to 1,806 digs and surpasses former Syracuse player Rachel Watson’s (1996-99) all-time mark of 1,791.
AKRON, OH – Senior defensive specialist Joscie Kaup became Syracuse’s all-time career digs leader after tallying a team-best 19 in a 3-1 loss against Akron at the Sheraton Hilton Invitational. Kaup’s record-breaking performance raises her career total to 1,806 digs and surpasses former Syracuse player Rachel Watson’s (1996-99) all-time mark of 1,791.
After collecting a Syracuse single-season program-best 685 digs in 2006, Kaup needed just seven matches into the 2007 season to eclipse Watson’s all-time record that stood for seven-plus years.
Senior Cheryl Cobbina tallied a team-high 21 kills to lead the Orange offense. Junior Brittany Kern and sophomore Kacie MacTavish, named to the Sheraton Hilton Invitational All-Tournament Team, tallied 11 kills apiece.
Redshirt-junior April Quigley tallied a team-high 45 assists, while sophomore Samantha Ainsworth added seven. Defensively, Kaup was joined by MacTavish’s nine digs, Quigley’s eight and sophomore Shanetha McLaurin’s seven.
After a narrow 30-27 loss in game one, the Orange evened the match at one game apiece with a 30-24 win in game two. Kern led the Syracuse charges with a team-best five kills while Cobbina and sophomore Sarah Morton each contributed three. Quigley paced the Syracuse attack with seven assists while Kaup collected five digs.
In the match’s decisive fourth game, Syracuse battled from behind to cut the Zips’ lead to just one point at 20-19. However, a 10-6 Akron run finished the match with a 30-26 win. Cobbina led the SU charges with a team-high six kills while Quigley totaled 16 helpers.
The Orange returns to Manley Field House for the first of a four-game homestand on Monday, September 3 against Albany at 3:00 p.m. Syracuse will remain at home for the weekend as the hosts of the Big Orange Tournament. Fordham and Texas Tech open tournament-play on Friday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m. before the Orange meets Princeton at 7:00 p.m.
